Chapter 40: Fireworks Accident (1)

Huo Xiaoxiao felt as if the fried chicken was stuck in her throat. The terrible thing was that she could not even vomit, and her mouth was filled with the taste of fried chicken.

But when she saw the dubious look in her father’s eyes, she knew she was talking more than usual. Her father did not believe her an ounce.

“Really! Daddy, you can feel it. It’s so swollen.” She grabbed Huo Suicheng’s hand and placed it on her bulging little belly.

Little children generally had little tummies. It was a bulging mass, soft and round, like jelly beans.

“You’ve always had such a big belly.”

“…” Her dad was too blunt!

“Then you smell, belch—I… fried chicken is stuck here!” She pointed to her throat and burped.

When Huo Suicheng smelled the odor of fried chicken, he frowned and immediately moved his head back.

“Smell, you smell!” Huo Xiaoxiao opened her mouth wide and stuck her head forward in an arrogant and condescending manner.

Huo Suicheng covered his daughter’s mouth and berated her. “Do you still dare to be so greedy in the future?”

Huo Xiaoxiao shook her head.

Huo Suicheng picked her up and made her stand in the corner. “Stand here to let the food digest.”

After that, he started walking towards the door.

“Daddy, where are you going?”

“To find a feather duster for you!”

Huo Xiaoxiao: “!!!”

The door closed.

Huo Xiaoxiao stood in the corner with her head against the wall, her hands jerking back and forth. She rubbed her uncomfortable stomach and then burped again.

As time passed by, her father still hadn’t returned.

He wasn’t really going to get a feather duster, was he? Was he going to beat her up while her grandpa wasn’t around?

“Hiccup—”

‘Forget it, I should just let him beat me.’

Huo Xiaoxiao thought and sighed in resignation.

" "

As long as her stomach discomfort was eased, anything would do.

Anyway, her father was always concerned about giving her a complete education. Maybe after beating her up, he probably wouldn’t think about it all the time.

As Huo Xiaoxiao was lost in her thoughts, the door suddenly opened.

She looked ahead and immediately burst into tears.

Her daddy was finally back!

And what was more heart-warming was that he did not bring a feather duster with him!

She knew her daddy wasn’t that cold and heartless; he still had a bit of human heart!

“Come here. I’ve brought some medicine for you.”

Huo Suicheng put the medicine, a tablet and a syrup, on the table. “Which one do you want?”

“…” Huo Xiaoxiao pointed at the syrup bottle and said, “This.”

Huo Suicheng opened the box of the digestive syrup and handed her the bottle.

Huo Xiaoxiao took the syrup bottle eagerly and stuffed it into her mouth.

The syrup was not particularly bitter. In fact, it was a bit sweet, a strange blend of sweet and bitter and a pungent medicinal smell.

She furrowed her brows while feeling the bitter and sweet taste melt on her tongue. She then swallowed the medicine syrup in the bottle little by little, enduring the taste.

After taking medicine, she didn’t feel that well. On the contrary, she felt a wave of nausea hit her.

“Is the medicine good or the fried chicken?”

“Fried chicken.”

“Still want more?”

“Don’t want anymore.”

‘I should eat less next time.’ Huo XiaoXiao thought in her mind.

Not sure if it was because of the medicine or the psychological effect, Huo Xiaoxiao felt less uncomfortable.

“Better?”

She said sweetly, “I don’t feel uncomfortable anymore. Daddy’s medicine is really good!”

“Are you still going out this afternoon?”

Huo Xiaoxiao yawned and blinked. Just now, she was unable to sleep earlier due to her stomachache, but now that she had taken some medicine, she felt drowsy and sleepy again.

“No. I want to sleep.”

“Then you can go sleep in the room downstairs.”

“What about Yi Qian?”

“Aunt Zhao took him out to play.”

“Oh.”

Huo Suicheng sat on the couch and was typing on his tablet. Huo Xiaoxiao leaned over and saw that the tablet was full of English, which she couldn’t quite understand.

“Is Daddy working?”

“Uhm.”

Since he was working, Huo Xiaoxiao did not disturb him but just leaned against him to rub her belly.

She rubbed her stomach to the right three times, then to the left three times, but she always felt unmotivated.

Looking at her daddy’s free right hand, she grabbed it and placed it on her stomach. “Daddy, rub my belly for me.”

Huo Suicheng, who was in the midst of his work, spared a moment and rubbed her stomach a couple of times before taking his hand back.

“…Daddy, rub!” Huo Xiaoxiao grabbed his hand again and placed it on her belly.

Huo Suicheng looked at her and asked, “Where is your hand?”

Huo Xiaoxiao stretched out her hand and matched her palm with his.

“Daddy’s hands are so big and comfortable. My hands are small and uncomfortable to rub.”

Her father’s hands were pretty good-looking. They were long and well-boned, and there were no traces of rings on any of his fingers. The veins on the back of his hands were nearly visible, unlike her hand, which was so fat and short that she couldn’t even cover her throat. Moreover, the back of her hand was full of flesh, and it was not as big as the palm of her father’s hand.

Huo Suicheng rubbed her belly and suddenly smiled mischievously. “Do you remember Peppa from the Peppa Pig cartoon?”

“I remember.”

“Your little belly is exactly the same.”

“…” Her dad’s mouth was truly incapable of uttering nice words.

The hand on her stomach gently rubbed her round belly. After feeling better, Huo Xiaoxiao didn’t bother to care about her father.

Perhaps because she felt too comfortable or perhaps she was really sleepy, Huo Xiaoxiao’s eyelids gradually drooped. She didn’t resist the urge and fell asleep quietly.

" "

Huo Suicheng looked at the sleeping Huo Xiaoxiao. He put down the tablet, got up, took the blanket from the other end of the sofa, and covered her with it.

The balcony was open, and the wind was blowing into the living room.

It was noon, still alright for the wind to blow. However, it was probably going to get cold if the wind blew again.

Two more windows on the balcony were closed, leaving only one small one for a little breeze.

After doing all this, Huo Suicheng sat back on the sofa. He focused on the tablet, put his hand on Huo Xiaoxiao’s belly, and rubbed it.

Creak…

The door opened.

“Uncle Huo—”

Huo Suicheng looked over at the young boy and whispered, “Keep your voice down. Xiaoxiao’s sleeping.”

Yi Qian, who came in, lowered his volume at once. “Okay.”

“Weren’t you playing outside? Why are you back?”

“Xiaxoxaio said she ate too much, so when I saw some candy hawthorn outside, I bought a bunch of them for her. I heard that this is good for her.”

“She’s all right now. You can keep it for yourself.”

Yi Qian took the candy hawthorn and looked at Huo Xiaoxiao, who was lying on the sofa, and softly said, “Oh, okay.”

Seeing that he still hadn’t left, Huo Suicheng said again, “Go and play with Aunt Zhao.”

“Then I’m going out.”

Yi Qian stepped back three times.

It was not that fun out there, and definitely no fun all alone. If he knew something like this would happen, he would have slept with Xiaoxiao too.

————

Huo Xiaoxiao slept from noon to 4:30 p.m. From the moment she opened her eyes to her nap half an hour later, the whole person leaned against the sofa. She stared blankly while looking sluggish.

Huo Suicheng looked at her and asked, “Awake?”

He was still beside her.

Huo Xiaoxiao yawned, leaned against her dad’s shoulder like a boneless sloth, and nodded lazily.

“Gollum—” Huo Xiaoxiao covered her stomach.

The belly that was bloated before going to bed was now empty.

“I’m hungry.”

“Get up and wash your face. Daddy will take you to dinner.”

Huo Xiaoxiao didn’t want to move a muscle after waking up. She buried her face in her father’s shoulder, rubbed her face against it, and whined, “Wash up.”

“…” Huo Suicheng put the tablet on the table in front of him and carried her to the bathroom to wash up.

At five o’clock, Ocean World had fewer visitors than at noon.

The tourists who were not going to watch the night fireworks left one after another.

Invited by the hotel staff, Huo Suicheng and his group went to the upper terrace to watch the nightly fireworks, which was the best place to see them.

They also sat and ate there.

Huo Xiaoxiao had slept with a stomach ache and woke up feeling ravenous. She felt so hungry that even the peppers and vegetables, which she hated the most, were stuffed in her mouth during dinner.

“Xiaoxaio, want some fried chicken?” Yi Qian picked a piece of fried chicken for her.

Seeing the fried chicken, Huo Xiaoxiao’s stomach became uncomfortable. She shook her head like a rattle drum and refused at once. “No, no, no! Take it away; take it away!”

“…Okay.” Yi Qian placed the piece back.

After dinner, it was almost dark.

The fireworks were at eight o’clock in the evening. There was still half an hour until then.

The hotel staff thoughtfully sent a gift box of fireworks for adults and children to play by themselves.

Huo Xiaoxiao glanced at the various kinds of fireworks, which could be described as many different kinds of playthings for her.

“Dad, can I play?” Before Huo Suicheng could say ‘no’, Huo Xiaoxiao beat him to it and said, “It will be fine with Daddy here. Daddy, help me light them up.”

The sweet words succeeded in pleasing her father.

Huo Suicheng looked at the staff members and said, “Leave it.”

The staff member put down the gift box and left politely.

At eight o’clock in the night, the magnificent fireworks show started on time.

A trail of light flew towards the sky, wavering in its course and seemingly halting at the pinnacle of its reach. Boom! One by one, the lights shot up to the sky, proudly blossoming into one dazzling spectacle in the pitch-black sky. The firelight shone all around, glowing with color and falling like a meteor.

Gradually, the colorful sparkles of the fireworks decorated the dark dome of the sky. The densely packed shades revealed a luminous, exciting spectrum of colors that moved every viewer.

Huo Xiaoxiao sat on Huo Suicheng’s lap and looked up at the sky, smelling the fragrance of fireworks.

Huo Suicheng looked down at her and reached out to cover both her ears.

The grand fireworks display ended after half an hour.

Huo Xiaoxiao got off of Huo Suicheng’s lap and excitedly unwrapped the fireworks gift box with Yi Qian, took out a fairy wand, and stretched it out in front of her dad as she stood on her tiptoes. “Daddy, light it.”

Huo Suicheng took the fairy wand-like object from her hand and lit it.

The fairy wand was ignited and blossomed with a dazzling spark.

Huo Suicheng touched the ignited spark with his hand. It was not hot and the sparks did not burn when they fell on his clothes.

“Play with it.”

“Thank you, Daddy!”

Huo Xiaoxiao was so excited that she ran over to Yi Qian. She brought her lit up fairy-like wand to Yi Qian’s unlit wand with a grimace. The wand in his hand was also soon ignited.

“Beautiful! Yi Qian, bring some more over here.”

" "

“Okay.”

Yi Qian took all the fairy sticks from the fireworks box and lit them up one by one.

The sparkling firelight bloomed like a flower in her hands.

“Come, Xiaoxiao, Yi Qian, look at Aunt Zhao here. Aunt Zhao will take a picture of you.”

Yi Qian leaned in and stood shoulder to shoulder with Huo Xiaoxiao, giving the camera a big smile.

After the fireworks, the tourists on the square dispersed one after another. The people here on the hotel terrace also followed suit.

Yi Qian took out all the fireworks from the box. He held a small tadpole-shaped object and asked Huo Xiaoxiao, “Xiaoxiao, what is this?”

Huo Xiaoxiao glanced at Yi Qian’s hand.

It was a small firework shaped like a tadpole. She used to call it a firecracker, which, as the name implied, could be thrown directly into the ground to make a sound.

She didn’t know that the hotels even offered this kind of thing.

“This one is a ‘little tadpole’.”

“’Little tadpole’?”

“Do you know how to play with it?”

Yi Qian shook his head.

Huo Xiaoxiao leaned into his ear and told him, “Take this ‘little tadpole’ and throw it hard towards the front.

“Slamming hard?”

“Well! Small strength won’t make a sound. Yi Qian, are you strong?”

“Strong!”

“Then, give it a try.”

“Okay!”

To prove his strength, Yi Qian took a ‘ little tadpole’ and slammed it hard in front of him.

The ‘tadpole’ jumped and landed at Huo Suicheng’s feet.

But strangely, there was no sound.

“How come it didn’t pop?”

Huo Xiaoxiao was also wondering about it.

No, it shouldn’t be like this. Didn’t it make a sound as soon as it fell?

Was it because it was of low quality?

“Try another one.”

Yi Qian took a ‘tadpole’ and tried it again by slamming it forward with more force, but it still didn’t make a sound.

This was really strange.

He took another one and slammed it down hard, but the same result.

This was followed by a series of three or four throws without any pops.

“Is it broken?”

Huo Xiaoxiao did not believe in the evil spirits, so she took one for herself. Raising her hand, she threw it at the ground with all her strength.

“Pop—”

A crisp crackling sound exploded at Huo Suicheng’s feet.

The crunch came so suddenly that Huo Xiaoxiao’s heart skipped a beat.

Huo Suicheng turned back.

“Pop—”

“Pop—”

“Pop—”

“Pop—”

The crackling sounds rang out one after another near Huo Suicheng.

There were even fragments from the blast that bounced off of his eyebrow.

Huo Suicheng frowned slightly and looked at Huo Xiaoxiao, who was holding up a ‘little tadpole’ in his direction. “Huo Xiaoxiao!”

Huo Xiaoxiao panicked for a moment and said, “Dad, listen to me! Those, I didn’t throw them. Yi Qian threw them!”
