Chapter 5 - Mourning Vigil

As expected, nothing happened that night. As soon as the day broke, one of the players pushed the back door impatiently and found out that it was already open.

“We can leave now!” He shouted in surprise, waking up the drowsy crowd.

Only then did everyone realize that the sky had dawned and the rain had stopped. The ground was dry, making it seem like it didn’t rain at all.

Some players hesitantly went to the door. They were a little afraid to go out, for the fear that another death would occur again.

Gu Mozhi wasn’t concerned about the situation, he directly picked up the young girl who was sleeping soundly and walked out through the back door. There was a courtyard outside the back door, surrounded by a wing room that was originally intended for the players as a bedroom. Gu Mozhi randomly chose a room, went in, and put the young girl on the bed. Seeing that there was a small couch outside, he directly walked towards it and lay down.

There will also be a danger during the day, and putting the young girl alone in the room made him feel uneasy, so he went to a couch near the room. As in case something goes wrong, he can quickly rush over.

Gu Mozhi didn’t sleep well last night and it just so happened that he wasn’t hungry as he had just eaten, so he simply slept again.

In fact, demons are fine even if they don’t eat anything. If only they didn’t come across the cookbook, they wouldn’t feel hungry. However, this doesn’t mean that they can’t eat. Before, Gu Mozhi sometimes went to eat some human favorite snacks when he was hungry, but there is probably nothing delicious in this game, so it’s better not to eat.

He slept directly until noon. When he opened his eyes, he saw the young girl sitting on the stool outside, staring at him eagerly. She had been starving for a long time but didn’t dare to wake up her big brother. Therefore, she silently waits for Gu Mozhi to wake up with a hungry stomach.

Now that Gu Mozhi was awake, she breathed a sigh of relief and hurriedly said, “Big brother, let’s go eat?”

Gu Mozhi nodded, got up, and took her out. There was no food prepared here, presumably they have to go on the street to find food.

From the back door, one should pass through the mourning hall to go onto the street. When Gu Mozhi arrived at the mourning hall, he sensed that the atmosphere here was not quite right.

Several players suddenly slumped on the ground with pale white complexion and did not respond for quite a while.

Gu Mozhi walked over and gently kicked a dazed person: “What happened?”

Unexpectedly, this person came back to his senses. However, his first reaction was to get up, run out of the mourning hall in fear, and disappear in a flash. As a result, several other people also scrambled and ran out, almost hitting the ground head-on.

Previously, he was not prepared, but this time, Gu Mozhi will not let them run away. He reached out and grabbed one, taking him by the collar and walking out of the mourning hall. He stood at the door and asked, “Say it, what happened.”

Judging by their appearance, it can be assumed that something terrible happened in the mourning hall just now.

“I ……” the player gulped, looked back at the empty mourning hall, and shivered again. However, his complexion improved a lot after leaving the mourning hall. Therefore, his rationality returned at this moment.

Gu Mozhi listened respectfully.

But he said: “Can we talk a little further away from here? I– I’m a little scared ……”

“What a nuisance.” Gu Mozhi grumbled unhappily, and after thinking about it, he took him and the young girl towards a noodle stall on the corner of the street. It just so happens that the young girl was hungry. Thus, she could eat while they were talking.

Gu Mozhi glanced at the noodles at the next table and knew that the taste was average. Hence, he only ordered a bowl for the young girl, not intending to eat one himself. As for the player who was brought over, Gu Mozhi didn’t bother giving him food. Fortunately, he didn’t have any appetite to eat at the moment.

After sitting down, the guy’s mood finally eased up completely. He took a wary look around and found that there were only a few “NPCs” here, and Gu Mozhi, who was strong enough to beat female ghosts, was also there. Only then did he relax and honestly tell what happened before.

""

It turns out that after Gu Mozhi took the lead and went back to catch up on some sleep, the remaining players split into three factions.

The first faction thinks that they can take this opportunity to get a good sleep, for it is the safest time as it just dawned. Thus, these people also followed Gu Mozhi to find a room to sleep. However, they are timid and didn’t dare to sleep in a room alone, so they just squeezed in a room with a few people to ensure safety.

However, this group of people was not at peace either. They ran out soon after they slept and said that the room was haunted, and they didn’t dare to sleep anymore. Some people choose to squint in the mourning hall for a while, some people do not sleep at all and went outside the mourning hall.

Gu Mozhi thought that he and the young girl slept well without any ghosts disturbing him. Perhaps it was because he had just tossed a ghost last night. Those ghosts would communicate with each other and would definitely know that he wasn’t easy to deal with, so they didn’t dare to drop by and deliver themselves as food.

The second faction of the player felt that it was already dawn, and should take this opportunity to see the situation in the town, maybe they could ask for useful information. Since this instance has day and night settings, the day must have its meaning. It should be the time for the players to leave, search for information, and find ways to deal with ghosts.

What’s more, they couldn’t always expect Gu Mozhi to beat the ghosts down. What would they do if a ghost that Gu Mozhi couldn’t deal with appeared before him? They still have to rely on themselves.

This group of people boldly went out, there were also no accidents when they walked into the street. After that, they basically didn’t come back, only occasionally someone passed by the door, but it was impossible to see if there was any gain.

In the end, those players didn’t dare to go back to sleep or went out. There are few people who have been guarding the mourning hall, as some people have chosen to leave the mourning hall for they realized that there was no danger. Only three players remained on guard and refused to leave, firmly believing that the mourning hall during the day was not haunted and there was definitely no danger.

Here is where things go wrong.

“Not long ago, a few townspeople suddenly came to mourn. They didn’t care about those of us who came back halfway. They directly looked for the three people who had been staying in the mourning hall without moving their nests.” These players belong to the first group of people who ran out halfway through sleep1, “The townspeople insisted on letting the three of them receive their mourning guests, but the three of them didn’t understand the rules of mourning. These townspeople had a lot of troublesome mourning rules, and the three of them made a mistake. They were directly caught by the townspeople.”

The townspeople shouted at that time that these three people were definitely not the hosts, but the murderer who killed the deceased in the coffin. Then they called a lot of townspeople to join forces to arrest the three of them. They directly pressed them on the top of the coffin and killed them. The lid of the coffin was splashed with blood, which scared the rest of the players.

After that they dragged the player’s body out again, no one knows where it was taken. The players were all frightened and stupefied. They didn’t notice when the bloodstains on the coffin and the ground disappeared. Gu Mozhi asked why there were no bloodstains, and only then did this player2 react to the fact that the bloodstains were gone.

“I don’t know.” The player cowered for a moment, “I was just stunned, I didn’t know what happened afterward. When I saw someone running out, I realized that the mourning hall was not safe and wanted to leave quickly, so I tried to run. ”

In the end, he was caught by Gu Mozhi.

Gu Mozhi ran out of questions. He waved his hand and let the guy go. He then turned his head and asked the young girl who had eaten a large bowl of noodles: “Are you full?”

The young girl touched her belly and nodded: “Mm!” 3

She was still a bit shy and embarrassed as she had eaten so much.

“Let’s go then.” Gu Mozhi got up.

The noodle stall owner hurriedly stopped him, “You haven’t paid yet.”

Gu Mozhi disgustingly glanced at the owner’s faint ghostly aura. The NPC townspeople here are not ghosts but probably not human either. They have no personality. Instead, they are tainted with a ghostly aura from years of contact with ghosts. In short, it’s not in his recipe, and it’s probably not delicious, so he doesn’t really want to talk to this thing that can’t even provide him with enough food.

However, he still understood the principle of paying for food, so he patiently asked, “How much is it?”

The noodle stall owner was just about to quote a number when he suddenly saw Gu Mozhi’s face and suddenly changed his tone, which was very strange because the content became too fast: “Nine – there’s no need to pay! If you want to come and eat noodles, it would be an honor for my small store!”

Gu Mozhi: “……”

Apparently, ghosts aren’t the only ones who mutually exchange information but also these townspeople.

Since the other party said he didn’t want money, Gu Mozhi departed with a clear conscience. He intended to wander around the town, certainly not trying to find ways to restrain the ghosts. How could he not beat his own food? He actually just wanted to stroll around the town to see if he was lucky enough to run into a ghost again, for he hadn’t eaten yet.

After he left, the noodle stall owner tremblingly opened the system panel. Unlike the players’ system interface, only theirs had the administrator’s notification bar.

At that moment, the capitalized and bold message in the notification bar states that a sturdy player from Purgatory ate the deranged ghost frantically last night. Please be careful not to confront the devil. A high-definition un-coded frontal photo is also attached below so that the NPCs and ghosts can recognize who the devil is.

Gu Mozhi, who had no idea that he had been on the town’s blacklist, leisurely took the young girl for a walk in town. On the other hand, it was unknown where Pinkhead and the female college student went. Gu Mozhi got bored and chatted up with the young girl.

“What’s your name?” Gu Mozhi suddenly remembered that he still didn’t know the young girl’s name.

The young girl followed him obediently: “Jian Linglong, big brother. But you can call me Linglong.”

“Well, my name is Gu Mozhi.” Gu Mozhi politely returned the favor and gave his first name. After the awkward conversation, there was nothing to say again.

Anyway, there was nothing to do, so Gu Mozhi walked and started thinking. As his thoughts ran wild, he soon turned back to the young girl.

He thought that such an innocent cub won’t probably survive for three days, and a kind-hearted demon like him would definitely want to help her. However, it is impossible for him to take care of her all the time, so it is better to think of a way to make her self-reliant.

As the saying goes, it is better to teach a man to fish than to give him fish, Gu Mozhi pondered for a while and got an idea.

First, he has to give the young girl a little means to stand on her own feet. Second, he has to teach her some philosophies of life that are conducive to survival. In this way, he can help Jian Linglong to grow up quickly. Although there are doubts in raising a seedling, at this time, he doesn’t care about such a small problem.

Philosophy of life (distorted) shouldn’t be instilled in haste. The fastest way to make the young girl sturdy is to let her do big things, and she will quickly become devious, ah no, grow up. The main thing is to impart the means, but it depends on whether the other party is willing to learn.

Hence, Gu Mozhi turned his head and asked Jian Linglong sincerely: “Do you want to become a magical girl?”

Jian Linglong, who indulges in various girl anime at this age, said: “Eh, eh, eh? Is it really possible? Are there really magical girls in the world?!”

Gu Mozhi answered without blinking: “Yes!”
