The game had begun and a strange system window had appeared, but the routine was still the same.

Contrary to my worries, nothing special had happened so far.

…is what I thought.

As per usual, I went to a room that’s been marked on the map as having a ready meal. And there, I ran into Dietrich while he was confronting scores of monsters.

Whoosh! A strong gust of wind blew past Dietrich as it swung a heavy fist at him.

With a loud noise, the impact caused shattered debris to fly out in all directions, as sharp as blades.

It was an exceedingly bloody sight.

“Why are you…”

“Hi?”

As I went inside, Dietrich frowned the moment he noticed my presence. However, his focus was soon wrenched away from me because he had to stop a monster from rushing right at him.

Well, wasn’t this a predicament for me?

I only came into this room to get some food…

‘The meal…’

The table could be seen in one corner, smashed to pieces. And the meal in question was underneath the rubble—its plate shattered, the food crushed beyond recognition.

‘That’s inedible now.’

What a waste.

[ Charlotte’s Task ]

Immediately swoop in and attack, to the point that ‘Dietrich’ can’t move.

If you are successful, you will be one step closer to ‘Charlotte’s Authority’.

Do you accept the task?

※ Refusing the task shall incur a penalty.

[ Yes / No ]

Then suddenly, this strange window popped up.

Was this one of the ‘tasks’ that the system mentioned before?

‘But why are you giving me a choice this time?’

If it wanted me to do this, it could very well strip away my autonomy, just like when Dietrich had first come into the mansion.

Why was it coercing me into doing its bidding now in such a cumbersome way?

‘I can’t fathom the reason, seriously.’

I wanted to refuse, but I couldn’t ignore the penalty that I’d get if I did so.

I urgently had to make a decision.

[ Steel Mentality is being implemented. ]

The moment ‘steel mentality’ took effect, I felt my mind cooling off as if cold water had been poured over my head.

‘I’ll be in trouble if I get a penalty.’

Without any more hesitations, I tapped the ‘Yes’ button.

At that moment, a strong gust swept towards me.

The wind carried with it a ferocious killing intent, and when I looked up in surprise, I saw Dietrich standing in front of me to block the attack.

BANG!

The monster indiscriminately swung its stone fist down, yet Dietrich blocked it with a clash of his sword.

“Why are you just standing there blankly?!”

Dietrich reproached me for being absent-minded.

“You’re helping me?”

“……”

As I saw a touch of annoyance in his gaze however, I felt that it might be better not to open my mouth from now on.

As expected, he’s a good guy. In his perspective, I was the one who locked him up in this place, but he was still helping me like this.

‘I still have to carry out my task though.’

“You’re in the way. Please leave.”

What a predicament. I have to finish the task…

But how was I supposed to stop Dietrich with my own strength? Even if I dangled onto him, I wouldn’t be able to incapacitate him, would I?

Then, as Dietrich was distracted because of me, the monster roared deafeningly and rushed in.

As it started to swing its fist straight at us, Dietrich pulled me by the waist and avoided the attack, which very narrowly missed.

“Why do you keep standing still when it’s so dangerous!”

“That monster is after you and not me though…?”

“……”

Did I really have to run away?

He protected me, sure, but it didn’t feel like I needed the help.

“…But we both almost got flung away. By any chance, are you here to obstruct me?”

“What?”

I felt wronged for a moment… But he was right.

My original purpose in coming here was to get some food, but that purpose changed the moment the system window appeared.

Though I couldn’t exactly tell him my true thoughts…

“It’s not like that.”

It sure didn’t look like he believed me.

“I’m here to help you.”

Those eyes held not a single smidgen of trust, huh.

“If you really came here to help me, you would have already done something about those monsters. You can control them.”

Oh, that’s a valid point?

Urged by Dietrich’s words, I looked towards the space above the monsters’ heads.

The system said that I should attack to the point that Dietrich wouldn’t move.

So, should I just stop those monsters first to keep things safe, then attack Dietrich?

The system never said anything about not stopping the monsters.

[ Would you like to use ‘Authority’? ]

〈 Authority 〉

– Ability to control a few monsters.

※ However, there might be side effects.

– Ability to wipe the windows to the point of luster.

– Ability to select steak sauce.

– ???

– ???

– ???

– ……

The thing about ‘a few monsters’ and ‘side effects’ were nagging at me. Still, just in case it’d work, I pressed ‘Use Authority’ anyway.

Yet…

[ It is a monster that cannot be controlled. ]

As Dietrich swung his sword and broke the monster’s stone neck, he looked back at me. My presence seemed to bother him a lot.

Then, I’d have to clear the task before he could finish this fight.

Then, a lightbulb lit up in my head.

‘Charlotte’s Authority.’

Believe it or not, there’s one good thing here that could maybe serve effective in attacking Dietrich.
