I suppose I was possessed.

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was a dazzling chandelier. And, for the record, it looked very expensive. While estimating the price of the chandelier, I pondered about how I died. I didn’t die from an illness because my body was healthy. I didn’t have a job yet, so I didn’t die from overwork, nor have I been hit by a car while saving an animal or child. I had never met a God, nor a suspicious fortune-teller. No matter how much I thought about it, I felt like I was just sleeping.

No matter how many possessions are a trend these days, is it okay to choose someone in such a reckless way? Well. It’s done, so it doesn’t matter. I have already fallen into possession, so let’s look back on the owner’s past life. The most important thing is within this body that I’ve possessed.

…Could it be that my possession was half-heartedly made?

No memories of the original owner’s body came to mind naturally. Looking at her hands, she didn’t look like she was young, so… wouldn’t it be better to possess a younger body? I didn’t know anything about the owner of this body, so I felt like I had to move forward with memory loss. With white hair and fine hands, it was clear that she was nobility, but no character came to mind.

Wasn’t it standard setting to be sent into the last novel you were reading, or your favorite one? There was no such thing as a favorite one for me, and, these days, I happened to enjoy martial arts genre novels with the ‘return of the demon lord’ setting. The recent novel I had read was the most vivid in my memories, but looking at the chandelier alone, it was clear this wasn’t a martial arts novel. If I had been possessed by a martial art, I would have died in some violent and horrible way, so it was a good thing…

‘It can’t be helped.’ It didn’t seem like I would get an answer by myself. In such a situation, you need to seek help from those around you. I thought of asking the old man staring absent-mindedly next to me. Looking at the clothes he was wearing and the thick bible he was holding, he looked like a priest. If it was a setting where I possessed a sickly character, it was obvious why a priest would be by my side.

‘The memory loss technique is the best call. Come to think of it, where am I?’ I took a glance around, and I freaked out for a moment.

‘Why are there so many people?’ As I sensed a presence around me and glanced over, I saw people in the room staring at me. They were all dressed in black, holding their breath.

‘To realize this just now… I suppose I was really out of my mind.’ I was so distracted by the unfamiliar ceiling that I couldn’t even notice it before, but this wasn’t a bedroom. Because it felt soft, I thought I was on a bed, however, it was full of flowers. Cherry blossoms? Or is it plum blossoms? Where did such a fragrant smell come from?

‘…Wait. There’s something familiar about where I’m lying… Is this—a coffin? Am I lying in a coffin? Then… no way—am I at a funeral right now? Is that why everyone is wearing black clothes?’

My head was dizzy. It wasn’t uncommon to possess the body of a dead person. Rather than possessing a healthy body, the stories I had read often were about possession of a body fated to die or being possessed by an already dead child. Thus, this kind of possession was seen more often.

‘But what—possessing a body at a funeral? People are staring at me as if I’m a ghost! At the very least, I should have possessed the body right away after she died!’

This degree of carelessness was quite outstanding. The priest next to me seemed to be out of breath by now. From that man’s point of view, it was as if a corpse had come back to life, wasn’t it?

‘I think I need to fix this somehow. What should I say? “Ta-da~ you all thought I was dead, right?” or “Is this a surprise camera?” Ah~ I don’t know. I’ll say whatever. Gosh, I have to say this first before I say anything else.’

“What’s my name?”

To be clear, since it’s obvious I possessed a noblewoman, honorifics and formal speech must be omitted.

* * *

The name of the body I possessed is Evangeline Rohanson. Mn. As expected, I don’t know who she is.

Two days have passed since I possessed this body. On the first day, I was caught and harassed by the priest and doctors, and on the second day, I focused on getting information about Evangeline and this world.

My conclusion is—I became a villain. Whenever the servants saw me, they immediately bowed their heads, and when they talked to me, they trembled. I even saw people fainting as they glanced at me while I was taking a walk. Some young maid looked at me and begged me for her life, but her mouth was covered, and she was taken away into custody.

‘How vicious the original owner of this body must have been for a child to be like that? Live a bit nicely…’

Moreover, Evangeline had red eyes. In the Rofan worldview, only those with a rather evil tendency can have red eyes. It’s generally regarded as an ominous color, and people are abused and shunned. And then, the male protagonist in the original novel throws meaningless words such as “I think it’s pretty though?” And she’d fall in love, easily comforted by such a thing.

Furthermore, Evangeline was Count Rohanson’s only daughter. Her mother died when she was young and the only members remaining in the family were father and daughter. It had been two days since I had possessed Evangeline and, until now, I hadn’t seen her father’s face even once; it wouldn’t be wrong to say father and daughter’s relationship was not very good. A villainess’ father was either trash or a sucker for his daughter, but considering his daughter died and came back to life, and yet, he didn’t come to see her once, it seemed like he was the former.

‘Other than that, I don’t know.’

She didn’t have a fiancé, and since Rofan usually had the crown prince as the male lead, the first thing I looked into was the crown prince of this world, however, he was a middle-aged man with two children. There was no northern Archduke, nor Saint or Saintess. I learned this much by asking a maid. I searched through the room for a diary, but found nothing. Though, even if I had found it in the first place, I wouldn’t have been able to read it; because I have become illiterate.

‘How can I have this heedless possession where I can’t even read? Does it make sense that I don’t know the words while I’m fully able to understand the language by speech?’ It was impossible to collect information in the library because I didn’t know how to write. That’s how I ended up studying a second foreign language even though I had never thought of doing such a thing before. How bewildered the maid was when I told her that I couldn’t read. I didn’t expect to see her pupils shake as if an earthquake had run through her. Still, she said she would buy me an alphabet book because I had a very good excuse—memory loss.

‘And since the book is coming tomorrow, today is house tour!’

I can’t- she’s so funny lol I pity the servants who think she’s a ghost possessing the late Evangeline. I would be terrified if I had to serve her lol
