Chapter 18 Part 3

Xiao Youning was silent all the way to Qingfeng Daoist Temple.

She knocked on the doors. It was the Daoist Nun who answered and was surprised to see her. She wanted to invite her in.

She asked, “Is Daoist Priest Wu Ye inside?”

It took a moment for the Daoist Nun to understand who Daoist Priest Wu Ye was and shook her head. “He’s not here.”

“If the Daoist Temple’s Master is practicing cultivation, then it’s better for me to not go in and disturb him. I’ll wait for him outside. I have troubled you.”

Xiao Youning informed her with a smile. The Daoist Nun hesitated. She glanced at the small wooden token Xiao Youning had hung around her waist, and closed the door.

If she wanted to go in, she could go in at any time.

Xiao Youning spread a handkerchief on top of the steps, and pulled Yuan Guo to sit down as they began to wait for Ye Shen.

No one arrived until the sun reached the middle of the sky. At that time, the Daoist Nun came to deliver water and asked her if she wanted to go in and wait.

“No, I’m afraid the Daoist Priest hasn’t seen me because I may have made a slip of the tongue.” She smiled and thanked her. She held a wooden bowl to drink the water.

After a while, Yuan Guo’s stomach rumbled. She covered her stomach and said miserably, “Young Miss, the Daoist Priest is avoiding us again. Why don’t we go back? Last time he avoided us all the way. He probably doesn’t want to talk to us anymore.”

That Daoist Priest was cold and somber. He was really difficult to get along with, even though she was very grateful that he saved her Young Miss twice.

But Xiao Youning insisted. “He may be here soon.”  She still had something to ask him. She promised to come here herself, and she couldn’t go back on her words.

The master and servant continued to wait with their backs against each other. Yuan Guo’s belly kept rumbling like a beating drum, while Xiao Youning had waited for so long that she was sleepy.

There was a big tree in front of the Daoist Temple’s gate. It was green, lush, and cast a cool shadow. Sitting here, Xiao Youning did not feel hot in the midsummer afternoon. The wind blowing had a trace of cool air that caused people to fall asleep.

Ye Shen lightly ascended the stairs in front of Qingfeng Daoist Temple’s gate. He saw the master and servant who were sitting against each other had fallen asleep.

He had something to do at the palace so he was busy for a while. He had just come out of the imperial prison. After taking a bath, he rushed to Qingfeng Daoist Temple.

He thought she probably left when no one showed up after waiting for so long. He didn’t think she would still be there.

Ye Shen’s mood was extremely complicated at this time.

This was because of the decision he made to rush over, and because of Xiao Youning who was still here.

In these complicated emotions, there seemed to be something else. It was like a seed was sprouting in his heart without any warnings when he saw.

He looked down at the girl who was sleeping carelessly. He was trying to savor the unrestrained emotions in his heart but was interrupted by a loud sound.

The sound came from Xiao Youning’s stomach. It woke her up from her dream and she covered her stomach with her hand. She should have opened her eyes. However, she was not quite awake, and muttered, “Yuan Guo, I’m hungry…”

When the words fell, there was another sound.

Ye Shen was astonished and could not contain himself. The corners of his mouth rose. He pressed his hands on his lips to stop the laughter that wanted to escape and gave a low cough instead.

“Young Miss Xiao.”

Xiao Youning was half awake and poking Yuan Guo behind her with her elbow. When she heard him, she suddenly let out a cry and woke up in excitement.

“D-daoist Priest…Wu Ye!”

She finally realized who was standing in front of her and frantically stood up. She reached to wipe the corners of her mouth, without knowing what she was wiping.

Ye Shen could not stop the corners of his mouth from rising again because of her actions. Yuan Guo let out a scream at this time, which allowed him to keep his cold appearance in front of her.

Yuan Guo lost her balance and banged her head because Xiao Youning suddenly stood up.

“How come your maid is still so stupid?” Jian Yin was standing behind Ye Shen and spoke with a disapproving tone.

Yuan Guo turned around and got up. She scowled at him.

All of Xiao Youning’s attention was on Ye Shen. She was unaware that Yuan Guo was about to get into a fight. She smiled at the young man who looked extremely indifferent. “Daoist Priest, thank you for helping me get the confessions!”

The girl’s expression was glowing with happiness, and her bright eyes looked into Ye Shen’s eyes. It was like she was casting an enchantment.

He didn’t lose his concentration under her determined tone.

How did she know that he helped her?
