Chapter 4 Part 3

When Xiao Youning saw her turn around to clean her hands, she asked with a lingering fear, “Did you throw it far away? It’s not going to crawl back, right?!”

Yuan Guo smiled and said, “Of course not. I will hold the Young Miss’s feet to sleep. Young Miss does not need to be afraid…”

Suddenly, there was a curse coming from next door. It was loud and clear even with a wall between them.

Then, there was the sound of stomping, the sound of chasing, and the sound of something being knocked down.

Xiao Youning stared at the wall and blinked her eyes that were no longer sleepy. “Did the mouse run to the next door?”

Yuan Guo took the oil lamp and carried it to the bed and smiled happily.”Don’t worry about it. It’s okay as long as it doesn’t come to us anyways.” I feel good after getting revenge!

After Ye Shen pushed Ye Shen with a clothes hanger, he finally pierced the mouse that fell from the sky1, landed on his face, and tried to run away. He threw it out of the window and then closed the window under Ye Shen’s knife-like glare.

“Fifth Master, this mouse was thrown in by the people next door!”

Jian Yin clenched his sword and really wanted to go over and argue with them.

The room smelled bad and he was afraid it would be too stuffy for his Fifth Master. So, he simply opened the window and slept next to the window to guard it. At first, he heard the window opening from next door, and then the damn mouse appeared immediately after.

If it wasn’t thrown in by the next door neighbor, could it really have fallen from the sky?

Ye Shen had finally fallen asleep after having some difficulties and was awakened by the noise. He reached up and strongly pressed his temples. His thin lips spat out two words: “Shut up.”

Jian Yin felt like he was choked to death. He thought to himself that the  people next door were really black-hearted. They’ve been schemed against time after time. This was a new grudge added to an old one!

Xiao Youning ate breakfast early the next morning. She walked out of the relay station in high spirits. She got into the carriage and prepared to set out.

Ye Shen and Jian Yin came out at the same time. The master and servant both looked cold. Also, Ye Shen’s had distinct dark circles under his eyes. It was obvious that he didn’t rest well.

In comparison, Xiao Youning was like a bright and beautiful flower in full blossom on a tree branch in early spring during March.

Xiao Youning heard movement from behind her. She turned around, but only saw Ye Shen’s back get into the carriage. Afterwards, and then the green carriage left first and dust blew into her face.

“Cough, cough, cough…” Xiao Youning coughed from the dust.

“Insolent man! Don’t you have eyes?” Yuan Guo helped her catch her breath and grinded her teeth with resentment as the carriage traveled further away.

“Young Master, quickly get on. If we are delayed, then we can’t reach the next relay station on time.” The coachman urged her.

Xiao Youning quickly got on. Before she could sit down, the horse whip was flung down at the sound of “drive”. The carriage jolted and she nearly fell on her head.

Yuan Guo cried out in surprise and wanted to shout at the people outside to pay attention. However, Xiao Youning grabbed her arms and shook her head to indicate that she should not speak.

The Xiao Family’s Main Branch and Second Branch didn’t have any contact with each other. She was already surprised that they came to help her. These people needed to protect her during this long and difficult journey, so there was no need for her to be too ruthless.

Moreover, she was not the Master of the household.

Xiao Youning had never suffered this kind of unjust treatment before, including when they had someone deliver the food last night. But, she knew that life was not always going to be smooth sailing. It was more important to find information about her father and brother and it was not worth mentioning anything else.

Yuan Guo saw that she had to endure this treatment. She thought of how before, if they were at home and she fell on her head, the people at home would all feel distressed. Her heart became more uncomfortable.

Over the next few days, Xiao Youning never came across Ye Shen again, who left behind dust on her face. Everyday she was exhausted by the carriage jolting and would immediately fall asleep on the bed until the next day when they arrived at the next stop.

The more they headed towards Datong, the more refugees they saw on the road.

The refugees were either in groups of two or threes, or in a large group. They begged on the side of the road.

Today, an even more unexpected incident occurred. When the carriage slowed down because of potholes on the road, a thin and injured hand reached through the window in the chaos. It frightened Xiao Youning so much that her hands became sweaty.

Fortunately, a guard on horseback outside surrounded them quickly. It was only when the sword was drawn that the crowd was scared away, and the carriage was able to move forward smoothly.

When they were far away,Xiao Youning pulled the curtain up and looked behind. The voice of a guard came from above her head, “I thought the Young Master would just give these people a bit of charity.”

She looked up and came across the unclear eyes of the guard. She clenched the hand on her knee, and then said with chagrin, “I was startled just now and didn’t recover in time. They should have been given a bit of charity since they probably haven’t had enough to eat for a long time.”

The guard heard what she said but did not speak again. She put the curtain down. Her heart was pounding and her mind was racing with countless thoughts.
