Second Marriage

Ye Shen had previously warned Xiao Youning of what they might encounter on the road, and she could not stop thinking about it. She felt uncomfortable in her heart and stared at the busy crowd in a trance.

After easily setting up camp, the guards were divided into three groups. One group looked after the goods, the second started setting up the pot to prepare for dinner while the third patrolled the vicinity.

“What are you thinking about that made you frown just now?” Ye Shen was discussing some things with a few people. When they left, his gaze landed on her.

Xiao Youning was startled and snapped out of it. She finally focused on the camp.

She was unaware when the smoke was already rising up and the smell had mixed into the group. Aside from the birds returning to their homes as they emitted their cries in the skies, everything was very quiet.

She took a deep breath and smiled at him. “It’s nothing. I’m just a little worried. But with you here, it seems like I have nothing to be worried about.”

The red clouds on the horizon that she saw made her passionate peach blossom eyes mistier with a yearning.

Ye Shen’s fingers touched the corner of her eye. “Don’t worry, everything has been prepared properly.”

If all goes well, there might still be something surprising. 

His fingers pressed her eyes closed. “What are you doing?”

“You have charmed me before it is dark,” he whispered.

Xiao Youning felt that she was innocent. “When did I… I charm you?”

He had not been close to her these past few days, and she didn’t have a chance to charm him even if she wanted to.

He chuckled. “If I let you know, then will you still do it?”

She was more and more confused by his words, and then opened her eyes with a puzzled look.

Is this man even reasonable?!

Ye Shen also put down his hand.

Jian Yin caught three rabbits. He cleaned them up and brought them to the fire with the barbeque where they were sitting.

When Yuan Guo smelled it, she helped him cook.

Ye Shen looked at Jian Yin’s cooking skills and then looked at Yuan Guo helping him. They were not bickering, and this scene could not be more harmonious.

An idea flashed in his mind and he said to Jian Yin, “Give me one.”

“Huh? Fifth Master, this is not ready yet,” Jian Yin said.

“I will cook it.” Ye Shen found Jian Yin to be a one-track mind at times.

Jian Yin’s eyes widened. His master, who was even picky about the meat that reached his lips, wanted to cook his own meat?!

It was simply inconceivable.

When Ye Shen saw his unconvinced look, he knew that Jian Yin was mocking him on the inside. With a cold face, Ye Shen reached out and grabbed a stick of meat himself.

“Watch your sleeves!” Xiao Youning grabbed his sleeve that was above the fire, but it was still too late.

It was a pity that a small part of the fine satin was scorched by the fire.

But Ye Shen did not care. Once he took a stick of rabbit meat, he contemplated for a moment. Then, he began to copy the way Jian Yin was cooking.

Although he had never done this kind of work before, he was clever and observant. He waited until the meat was sizzling and both sides were seared. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

He sprinkled some prepared spices and carefully moved the meat towards Xiao Youning. “Blow it and then eat.” He looked like a young man who was looking forward to being praised.

Xiao Youning was shocked. She never thought she could eat something FIfth Master Ye made with his own hands.

“Hmm?” Ye Shen made a sound to prompt her, seeing that she did not move.

Jian Yin slightly raised an eyebrow.

She knew from one glance that he was going to misunderstand. She had no intention of disregarding his thoughts, so she quickly reached out and took a cautious bite. After only one bite, she paused. Ye Shen’s eyes narrowed and he carefully looked at the meat in his hand.

Did he mess up?

Jian Yin was also staring at Xiao Youning as he thought that his Fifth Master must have messed up!

In the end, they suddenly saw Xiao Youning’s bright and affectionate smile.

“Fifth Master is really good at cooking.” She took her handkerchief and used it to cover her hands as she tore off a piece of meat. Then, she brought it to his lips. “Try it yourself.”

Ye Shen took her hand and went forward in eating the meat.

Truthfully, the taste was very mediocre and on the mild side if he had to critique it, but it was well cooked.

But at this moment, she leaned over and whispered into his ear, “There is delicious food in my sweetheart’s mouth and it was made by himself.”

His cold face suddenly melted and he smiled. The happiness in his eyes was almost overflowing, while his heart was burning even more because of her.

Strangely enough, she often made his heart pound uncontrollably with a few words.

She smiled and tore off another small piece of meat to put into his mouth. Then, he reciprocated her actions.

Jian Yin and Yuan Guo were sitting across from them. They watched their masters feed each other like there was no one around. They had complicated feelings about this and didn’t know what to do. They turned to look at each other at the same time. When they caught each other’s eyes, they suddenly turned back in disgust and ate their meat silently.

Only a couple like their Fifth Master and Young Miss would make people feel envious and uncomfortable. As expected, affection made those watching feel this way.

Ye Shen and Xiao Youning ate too much without realizing it. After they cleaned their hands, they went for a walk in the open space.

After night came, Xiao Youning took a deep breath and looked at the starry sky in the distance. She said, “I can’t believe that there would be a day where I have traveled thousands of miles, taking the sky as my blanket and the earth as my bed. I simply think that there is this passionate, majestic feeling like a brave female hero traveling around the country.”

Ye Shen laughed. “You really yearn for this, but the real parts of the world are not this tranquil.”

“Don’t make me feel disappointed.” She looked back at him, her pretty appearance seemed mythical in the night.

But it did not have any effect on Ye Shen. Her appearance was already deeply imprinted in his mind. He suddenly leaned over and his lips landed between her brows. “Then I’ll make amends.”

As soon as she felt the warmth there, her face flushed, and she said with embarrassment, “You are clearly a hooligan that plays around!”

He chuckled and pulled her into his arms.

He really wanted to play around, but who knows how long it would take for her to be this comfortable with him again after today.

As Ye Shen was thinking, there was a loneliness in his eyes. Xiao Youning secretly looked up and noticed that something did not seem right with him.

How could his expression have this kind of sadness like they were about to be separated?
