Second Marriage

Chapter 51.1

Marquis Ningyuan was speechless for a moment when confronted by his daughter’s question. Seeing that her complexion was growing paler, he finally sighed and explained, “The letter he sent was written in his handwriting. It was written very carefully, so we can infer that he had plenty of time to write it and was not in any critical situation. It’s just that he didn’t show up at the appointed time. It was Jianyin who came with an Embroidered Uniform Guard covered in blood.”

“Where’s Jian Yin?!” Xiao Youning’s hands trembled. She stood up without realizing it and raised her voice.

Her panic made Marquis Ningyuan want to sigh even more. “Jian Yin said nothing and asked me to send someone to escort that Embroidered Uniform Guard back to the capital. He turned back and left towards the Wala territory.”

“Was that a few days ago?” Xiao Youning understood everything. Ye Shen had asked Jian Yin to bring the letter while he stayed in the enemy country.

“Two days ago.”

Xiao Qiye saw that his sister was really worried. He reached out his hand and tugged at her. “Quickly help me apply the medicine first, it hurts.”

It somewhat distracted her, and the three remained silent as she bandaged her brother’s wound. When a soldier delivered their food, Marquis Ningyuan asked her to eat a few bites and let her rest a bit to calm down. “I’ve asked the spies in Wala to inquire about the situation. I should get some new information tomorrow at the latest.”

Xiao Youning forced a smile.

At night, a drowsy Yuan Guo heard sobs.

""

It startled her awake and she quickly ran to the Young Miss. She found her with a wet pillow case while her eyes were closed. She must have fallen into a nightmare.

Yuan Guo nudged her to try and wake her up. The tent flap was suddenly blown open by the wind, and the cold wind made her shudder. There was another sound heard. It was not the sound of the wind but that of footsteps.

Yuan Guo stood up in alarm and looked back. It was dark and the dim light was covered up by the tall figure of the incoming person.

Someone squatted down in front of Xiao Youning’s bed and gently grabbed her hand. He wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. “I’m late.”

Yuan Guo was delighted and surprised when she saw who it was that came in. She was about to speak when someone dragged her out by the collar and covered her mouth.

Ye Shen crouched down next to the bed, Xiao Youning was dreaming and did not wake up. Amidst the dream, it was like she knew what was going on and held onto his hand, clenching it tightly. The unexpected action amused him.

“Go to sleep. I’m right here.” He lowered his head and kissed her forehead.

**

When Xiao Youning woke up, she thought she was dreaming.

In the dream, Ye Shen came back. He held her hand and slept all night on the couch. When she opened her eyes, she really did see him. But she was in a trance, unable to distinguish between reality and dream.

In her uncertainty, she used her finger to poke him on the cheek.

It was warm. It was also unshaved for who knows how many days. The hairs pricked her.

“Fifth Master!” She lifted the quilt right away and threw herself onto him.

Ye Shen was deeply focused during the past few days, and then hurried back. He slept soundly before she threw herself at him to the ground and he emitted a muffled groan.

When Xiao Youning heard that he was in pain, she realized that she was so excited that she was completely on top of him. She quickly got up and lowered her head sheepishly.

But her thoughts were out of control. While she did just lower her head, she couldn’t help it and looked up to stare at his haggard but still handsome face with a smile filled with adoration.

What a silly girl! Ye Shen could no longer contain the low chuckle. He put his hands around her waist and took her into his arms.

He just laid on the ground, feeling her warmth and softness. His heart felt freer from anxiety than ever.

“Can I speak now?”

“Huh?”

He spoke abruptly while Xiao Youning was lying on his chest. Her mind was chaotic, her heart was beating violently, which made her even more unable to understand what he meant.

He chuckled again in her ear and his fingers intertwined with her long hair. “Remember how I have something to say to you when I get back.”

She felt her heart beating harder.

His fingers ran through her hair and his tone was full of affection as he confidently asked, “Ning’er, will you marry me?”

As Ye Shen spoke, he was ready for her to be bashful and blush. Instead, he saw her sit up and nod her head nonstop.

He sat up with her. He was unable to suppress the surprise on his face and laughed uncontrollably after she cried out and got up to run away.

It really is too cute!

After laughing, Ye Shen felt a little uncomfortable. The wound on his back had opened when she threw herself onto him.

The little girl who ran out soon learned that he was hurt. She ran back with the medicine box in her arms. Without any hesitation or a word, she bandaged him carefully while he was naked.

“What kind of injuries are these?!

Xiao Youning was startled by the shocking wound on his body. His bones could be seen from his shoulder blade wounds.

“Their blades and arrows have blood grooves1 and inverted hooks. Once injured, it will only get worse,” Ye Shen said lightly.

All the dangers he faced went away when he returned, and he didn’t want her to worry too much.

These past few days, he had been managing the wound. Xiao Youning learned that the inverted arrow’s injury was twice the pain and could tear off a piece of flesh. Most of his injuries on the shoulder blades came from this.

He was like this while he was lying next to her all of last night!

She endured the heartache and bandaged him. Then, she crammed the man into her own bed. She didn’t even let him move when he ate his medicine or meal.
