Starting Life as a Baron

Chapter 9: Building Rose Town! A Side Task

It was impossible to expose the young dragon for now, but it was fine for Amy to be out and about. After all, Alan was the son of an earl, so it would not attract too many eyes. Alan played with Safi for a while and then asked Edward to get some of the crop seeds he had obtained from the Earl.

Although Earl Albert was disappointed with Alan, he was still his son. So, The Earl prepared a lot for him still. There were wheat seeds, cotton seeds, pea seeds, and some fruit seeds. They were all taken out one by one. Alan asked the butler to take some servants to distribute the seeds to the townspeople to use on the unused land.

“May the Gods always respect the monks, the noble lord, and the generosity of the adults forever!” The townspeople said.

Once they had learned that Alan would distribute the seeds to everyone to plant, they were all grateful to him. Seeds were precious and very expensive, especially wheat and pea seeds. Before Alan arrived in Rose, there were no wheat fields at all. There were only barley fields.

The barley was rough and unpalatable, but it was the only staple food in the town. It was so bad that the Earl only used it for the cattle. Alan could imagine why this town was so bared based on this information.

The townspeople became poor, which made them afraid to buy expensive crops to farm. After all, wheat and peas had a long growth cycle, and were expensive and fragile. If they were not taken care of, they could wilt. Compared to barley, they were too cumbersome. Now that Alan was going to distribute the crops, they only needed to take care of them.

At the end of spring and before summer truly began, Rose had a nice climate that was just right for sowing seeds. When Alan had patrolled the land before, he saw that there were enough fields and labor to plant the crops, just not the right experience.

These seeds and fields were all owned by Alan. He had asked the townspeople to sow them, and he would get 60% of the yield, while the rest would go to the townspeople. The townspeople had no objections, as other lords would ask for more. Alan just said that he did not need that much food for the time being.

Ding! Congratulations, host, for completing the task. You have obtained one hundred experience points and a new mission!”

Task: Construction. The dilapidated town has no decent buildings and the roads are extremely muddy. Rebuild the town,

Reward: 1,000 experience points and a Wheat Nature Spirit!

A new task immediately appeared in Alan’s mind. Rebuilding the town will give me a Nature Spirit again?! Allan nodded slightly to affirm what he wanted to do.

“Grandpa Edward, help me find some craftsmen and young townspeople. I have something to say,” Alan said to the old butler without hesitation.

Edward nodded when Alan finished speaking.

“As you wish. I will make the necessary arrangements.”

Alan’s miracle and generous distribution of the crops made the civilians pious. When they heard that he needed craftsmen and young men, many rushed over. After a careful selection, Edward took the town’s artisans and thirty young men to the castle.

“It is an honor to meet the new lord, and an honor to serve,” the leader of the group said.

The townspeople knelt before Alan to show their respect.

“Do not be too nervous. I do not eat people,” Alan said in a gentle tone while looking at the distant small town.

“I gathered all of you today to talk about reconstructing the town. You have also seen…the state it is in” Alan’s voice trailed off.

Alan had said that he wanted to rebuild the town, and everyone was visibly surprised at his words.

“Dear Lord, thank you for being so concerned about our lives, but we do not have enough wood to rebuild the town. We would have to go to the mountains to get the required materials. However, my Lord, there are wild beasts there. They are so terrifying that they can’t be approached!”

The only craftsman in the town was a rough-faced man with defined muscle, with a tall, burly stature. Behind him were three young apprentices.

“Oh? Beasts?” Alan said with slightly raised eyebrows.

“No wonder the houses in the village are so worn and are not rebuilt. It turns out there are beasts entrenched in the mountains,” Alan thought.

“Do not worry. I will send someone into the mountain to clear the land, and then I will send someone to protect you while you log.”

After Alan finished speaking, the townspeople’s eyes flashed with joy. Being able to work for the Lord was the highest honor for them.  At the same time, the work was also to rebuild the town, which made them even more joyous. Who did not want to live in a good house and have flat roads?

Soon under Alan’s arrangements, Marco led ten soldiers towards the nearest mountain to dispatch the beasts within. A smile flashed in Alan’s eyes while he watched Marco’s vest riding out. Moments later, the System prompted in his mind.

“Congratulations host. The side mission, Defeat the Beasts, has been triggered.“

Task: Rose has been harassed by the beasts and its people have been miserable. As the lord, you should deal with the threat.
