Chapter 3: Plan to Reclaim the Old Residence

Xiang Wan recalled the mention of the ‘Xiang Family’s Old Residence’ from the original novel. However, this house should be in the hands of Huo Song.

The Xiang Family’s Old Residence was called ‘Xiang Yuan’. Before the owner’s family went abroad, Xiang Wan’s grandfather, following the family rule that ancestral properties should not be lost, entrusted Xiang Yuan to an old friend in Xiang Jiang.

This old friend was none other than Huo Chu. The two had established a deep friendship during the revolutionary period, so Xiang Wan’s grandfather had great trust in Huo Chu’s character. However, he didn’t anticipate that his friend had an unfilial son.

Huo Song saw that the house was many times better than his own, so he outright rejected the housing arrangement from his workplace and moved into Xiang Yuan. The residence was renamed as “Huo Residence.”

Xiang Wan did not expect to meet her fiancé’s ‘family’ so soon, so she decided to bring them a grand gift.

Early the next morning, after finishing the nourishing longan and lotus seed porridge prepared by Chen Ma, Xiang Wan grabbed her leather crossbody bag and headed out.

Her destination was Xiang Jiang’s port.

Upon reaching the port, Xiang Wan scanned her surroundings and quickly identified her target—the newspaper office.

Entering the newspaper office, she obtained a few recent newspapers and then found a chair by the window to sit down.

Spreading out the first newspaper, the headlines of the hottest news caught her eye. Among them, the largest headline was about the college entrance examination, the most popular topic that many newspapers were competing to cover.

She had come here to check on the situation with the Huo family, as she remembered there had been coverage about Huo Chu and his son Huo Song in the newspapers. Huo Song had even bought a special space in the paper to declare that he had severed his father-son relationship with Huo Chu.

She skimmed through the contents of these newspapers but didn’t find what she was looking for. She was wondering why there was no news about the incident with the Huo family, which had caused quite a sensation back then.

While she was pondering this, a girl wearing a beret and a black leather jacket approached her. The girl looked at her excitedly.

Perhaps the girl’s gaze was too intense, as Xiang Wan quickly sensed someone looking at her. “Excuse me, who are you?”

Xiang Wan looked at the other person in confusion.

“Wanwan, you don’t remember me at all? I’ve been missing you all this time!” The girl accused Xiang Wan with astonishment.

“I’m sorry, I don’t remember much. I got sick before and forgot a lot of things when I woke up.” Xiang Wan explained quickly, fearing that the girl might be a friend of the original owner and not wanting to reveal her true identity.

“Oh, I see. So, have you recovered from your illness? No wonder you don’t remember me. We used to play together when we were little. It’s a pity that you went abroad with your family back then, otherwise, we could have been good friends for many years.” The girl said regretfully. “Let me reintroduce myself, I’m Chu Ying, your best friend before you turned six years old!”

Chu Ying extended her hand toward Xiang Wan and introduced herself confidently.

“Hello, I’m Xiang Wan.” Xiang Wan placed the newspaper aside and shook Chu Ying’s hand.

“Wanwan, when did you come back to the country? If I had known, I would have gone to look for you earlier. How are Uncle and Auntie?” Chu Ying sat on the chair opposite her and asked casually.

“I just returned to the country not long ago. My family had a car accident abroad, and I was the only one who survived, so I came back to China.” Xiang Wan whispered.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know…” Chu Ying looked at her with an apologetic expression.

“It’s alright, it’s all in the past.” Xiang Wan said, pursing her lips.

“After all these years, you still look as beautiful as when you were a child, exquisite like a doll. But, what are you doing at the newspaper office?” Chu Ying didn’t want to see her upset, so she quickly changed the topic.

“I came here to check on some information, but I couldn’t find anything.” Xiang Wan looked at the newspapers on the table, spreading her hands helplessly.

“What do you want to investigate? I can help you with that. I’m familiar with this territory.” Chu Ying said generously.

“You own this newspaper company?” She looked at the girl in front of her, surprised by her capabilities.

“That’s not it! I’m a reporter. Wherever there’s news, that’s my territory. I have some connections with the boss of this newspaper company, so I often come here.” Chu Ying quickly explained, realizing that Xiang Wan had misunderstood.

“I’m impressed. I need your help with this matter.” Xiang Ying explained to Chu Ying about Xiang Yuan, expressing her desire to know the current situation of the Huo Family, so she came to the newspaper office to investigate the past events.

“Well, you’ve certainly asked the right person!” Chu Ying grinned happily. After hearing about the Huo family’s misdeeds, she exclaimed in anger, “What kind of person is he? How dare he seize someone else’s property. Watch me put him in the newspaper!”

Chu Ying stood up angrily and scolded loudly, drawing the attention of everyone in the newspaper office.
