The guard shook off Ah Chou’s hand. He took two steps back, then raised his foot and kicked the door open. He rushed in with a sword in his hand but soon froze in place when he entered the room, as did the fair-faced guard and Ah Chou, who followed in. Ah Chou’s eyes widened in horror at the sight of the woman hanging from the beam. She was about to shout, but the fair-skinned guard put his hand over her mouth and quickly closed the door.

“Shut up!” The fair-skinned guard lowered his voice. His face was very cold. He grabbed Ah Chou’s neck in one hand and suddenly pulled out the gleaming sword at his waist. “If you dare to speak out, I will let you be buried with your master!”

Ah Chou nodded like a chicken pecking at rice. She was only sixteen years old. Although she had a hard time, she didn’t want to die at all. Besides, she was not a loyal servant, and she didn’t have any reason to accompany Miss Duan, whom she had only known for a few months.

Only then did the guard release Ah Chou. He raised his hand and cut off the white silk on the beam. Miss Duan’s body fell to the ground. Both of the guards leaned over to check and found that the body was already cold and stiff. The young lady had been dead for a while. Ah Chou didn’t dare look. She just crouched in the corner and stared straight at the overturned, round wooden stool on the ground.

The two guards squatted around Miss Duan’s body. They looked at each other and both saw fear in their eyes. The dark-skinned guard paled in fright and asked the other guard with a trembling voice, “Brother, what… What are we going to do?”

The fair-skinned guard was evidently calmer. He looked thoughtfully at the deceased young lady, then suddenly turned to Ah Chou, who was crouching in the corner and shivering. He contemplated her and then asked, “Has the deposed prince seen the young lady?”

“Ah?” Ah Chou was taken aback at first but soon recovered and thought for a moment. “According to the steward, Miss Duan has never left the residence. The deposed prince shouldn’t have met her yet.”

“That’s good.” He sighed in relief before reaching out to untie the red bridal gown on Miss Duan.

“Brother, what are you doing?!” The dark-skinned guard asked in a low voice, blocking the other guard’s hand. His face was puzzled and angry. “Brother, don’t mess around! This person is dead! ”

“What were you thinking?” The fair-skinned guard shook off the other guard’s hand and said to him with a frown, “With this girl dead, we can’t love either! If we want to live, we have to find someone to take over this girl’s place! ”

“Brother, you mean…” When the dark-skinned guard finally understood the other’s intention, he also looked at Ah Chou and frowned. “But this girl is too ugly, and don’t you think her shabby demeanor is too far from a noble girl’s who grew up in a big household?”

Ah Chou shrank back, her face pressing against her thighs. The glaring sight of the dark red scar on her neck was strange.

""

“Who else do we have?” The fair-skinned guard said, “Since the deposed prince hasn’t seen Miss Duan, he wouldn’t know it’s not her. Besides, she is Miss Duan’s maid. Naturally, she knows her mannerisms best. It’s just like using a cat to draw a tiger. What’s more, it’s still uncertain whether the deposed prince is still alive or is already dead. Let’s just send her there.”
