He’s mine

Zhan Tianbai closed his eyes tightly and ground his teeth so hard that the gnashing sound could be heard.

The sickening sound of mocking laughter and leering insults filled his ears, but he knew there was no way to back out of what he had just said.

The Zhan family had been unwaveringly loyal to the Yao Emperor for generations, producing many fine generals who sacrificed their blood and sweat for Yao Country in countless wars. However, what they got in return was the complete extermination of their entire family, and Zhan Tianbai himself had his life completely ruined by a cup of poisoned wine.

Zhan Tianbai had wished, many many times, that he could have just been poisoned to death by that cup of wine. That would have been better than becoming the invalid he was now.

He had actually begged Duanmu Li once. That had been when the great city gate of Yao Country had been broken open by Nanchu forces.

He had begged Duanmu Li to kill him.

But Duanmu Li had not granted his wish.

He had instead doomed him to a life of wishing fervently for his own death. A torturous life that was not worth living but one in which he also could not die.

“Tonight, we are the beneficiaries of Li Wangye’s generosity!”

“Indeed, indeed! May Li Wangye live for a thousand, thousand years!”

“Gosh, guys – stop snatching! Let’s see who contributes the most silver… I’ll go first! I contribute a hundred taels of gold!”

“What’s a hundred taels of gold? I contribute a thousand taels of gold!”

“Hey, but Li Wangye has already said he’ll pay – we don’t need to pay any money, right?”

“You’re right! Ahahahaha!”

Zhan Tianbai felt his temples throb with pain listening to these Nanchu wastrels.

For one brief moment, he regretted his decision.

Would it have been better to choose Duanmu Li?

Zhan Tianbai turned his head away forcefully. He decided to take all this in his stride as something that a prisoner of war had to suffer. He was a soldier, a general who led the three main armies of Yao, and no matter what happened, he absolutely would not break!

Duanmu Li, I will never let you have what you want! I’d die first!

Suddenly, the chains above his head broke with a loud snapping sound.

Zhan Tianbai’s eyes flew open in shock. The very next second, his face and body were wrapped up in a black python-print cloak, and he was picked up bodily slung over one shoulder.

“Duanmu Li?!” Zhan Tianbai exclaimed in shock.

The person who had picked him up and carried him was none other than Duanmu Li.

All the Nanchu noblemen were stunned. They gaped in disbelief at the sight of Duanmu Li carrying Zhan Tianbai over his shoulder.

Clink clink clink!

A bag filled with money was thrown casually into Shen Yulan’s hands. Shen Yulan caught it, and as he did so, his entire body sagged with the weight.

“This is his ransom. He’s mine now.”

That deep, magnetic voice had a strange tone now, one that had anger and frustration and something that could not be described mixed in. Shen Yulan didn’t dare to object; he merely bowed in Duanmu Li’s direction as a gesture of thanks.

“This one thanks Li Wangye,” he said.

The large bag was obviously filled with gold, and there were probably at least a few tens of thousands of taels in there. He definitely would not have made a loss.

But Zhan Tianbai’s fate…

“Duanmu Li! Let go of me! Let go!” Zhan Tianbai screamed.

Shen Yulan gazed helplessly at Zhan Tianbai, who was struggling fiercely on Duanmu Li’s shoulder. He heaved a huge sigh.

The moonless night was dark, the winds were high, and the world was silent.

Zhan Tianbai did not know how he had ended up being brought to Duanmu Li’s residence.

Thud!

Duanmu Li kicked open the door and tossed Zhan Tianbai unceremoniously onto the large bed there.

“Ah!”

Duanmu Li had thrown Zhan Tianbai onto the bed so hard that Zhan Tianbai felt like all the bones in his body had separated from their joints. His eyes flooded with that crimson colour again, and he stared balefully at Duanmu Li.

“What on earth do you want? Duanmu Li, I didn’t choose you. I chose that group of Nanchu beasts!”

“Too bad,” Duanmu Li said. He was standing and looking down loftily at Zhan Tianbai, who was lying prone on the bed. The corners of his mouth curved upwards in a sadistic smile. “As to that question… this Wang has answered it for you.”

“You scumbag!” Zhan Tianbai said, his eyes widening in anger. Duanmu Li’s entire person started radiating a dangerous aura.
