Chapter 48 - The Fame of the Demon Slayer

After receiving the bronze-class adventurer’s card from Louise, the receptionist, Souya entered the adventurer’s tavern next to the adventurer’s guild and looked for a table with Mia and Merylou, who had arrived earlier.

“You guys …… We’re going to have a party now. Shoo, go away.”

As I entered the tavern, I heard Merylou’s voice. Judging from the way she said it, are they in some kind of trouble? When Souya turned his gaze toward the voice, he saw two men who appeared to be adventurers standing beside Merylou and Mia at a table near the wall.

“Merylou-san, that’s very cold of you. If you’re going to have a party, why don’t you join us now? We’ve just finished an adventure ourselves.”

“Yes, yes. Two against two is just right. Mia-chan, Merylou-chan, let’s have dinner and talk about the future.”

One is a short-haired man wearing a breastplate and carrying a long spear. The other is a long-haired gentleman dressed in the uniform of the academy and carrying a magician’s staff in his left hand. They were a combination of a warrior and a magician. Both of them were young and stylish, and their tone was light-hearted. Merylou did not hide her discomfort at all as they persisted in their insistence.

“…… Hey, Mia, tell them. That flirtatious people like them are not your thing.”

Merylou urged Mia, who was watching in silence, to speak.

“…… You know, I’d like to take you up on your offer, but we’re about to…”

“Mia-chan, we’ve been looking for a cleric like you, but we’re having trouble finding one.”

The magician-like gentleman interrupted Mia to make the first move, then winked and grabbed both of her hands.

“You’re free now, aren’t you, Mia-chan? Or are you and Merylou-chan teaming up?”

""

“Eh …… well, I’m ……”

Mia was about to say something, but she stopped speaking, turned her head, and fell silent. Souya waited for the conversation at the table to die down, but seeing the man’s attitude gradually escalate, he decided it would be better to intervene.

“…… Mia-kun, Merylou-kun, I kept you waiting. I’m sorry I’m late.”

Souya raised his hand deliberately and walked over to the table where Mia and Merylou were.

“Ahhh, Souya-san.”

“Souya? Who is he, Mia-chan’s acquaintance?”

The conversation that was advancing to their advantage was broken, and the magician-like gentleman had an overtly unpleasant tone.

At that moment, perhaps reacting to the name Souya, there was a bit of a commotion in the tavern.

“Hm …… Souya? …… The demon slayer who killed that demon general, Souya?”

“So that’s him, Souya …… Now that you mention it, he does have a certain vibe.”

“Heh …… So it’s him. Maybe I’ll ask him for his autograph later?”

All the customers in the bar were looking at Souya. The sound of someone whispering continued. The name of Souya, the man who defeated the Silver Demon, was rapidly gaining fame in the past few days. In fact, some quick-witted adventurers had approached him to recruit him, but Souya just turned them down.

These two people had just returned from an adventure and had not yet heard of Souya, the Demon Slayer.

(Oh dear …… That’s why I said it’s not all good. What a pain in the ass.)

Souya clucked his tongue so quietly that no one could hear, and put his hand on his glasses and sighed. He remembered that in the real world, he had been adamant about his promotion to assistant director. There was a time when Souya’s steady promotion was resented by his seniors. The more trouble I get into, the more stressed I get. It doesn’t even account for the little things like self-aggrandizement.

“…… Tch, what the hell …… If it’s the demon slayer we’re against with, we stand no match. I’m leaving …… See ya, Mia-chan.”

The magician-like gentleman spread his hands in an exaggerated pose of surrender, and quickly left the table.

“Hey, hey …… Wait a minute. A demon slayer, that’s outrageous …… I’m sorry to have disturbed you. Merylou-san, we’ll ask again next time.”

The warrior-like man carrying the long spear also seemed to have given up, and pursued the man who had left before him.

“Tsk …… Souya, you’re late. Where the hell have you been wandering about?”

Merylou, perhaps annoyed by the two men, reprimanded Souya for his lateness, which could be said to be the reason why he was approached.

“I’m sorry about that. I got a little carried away talking with Louise-san …… By the way, do you know the two people earlier?”

“I don’t know them. But they seemed to be acting very familiar and frivolous …… Well, from the way they were acting, I’d say they were after Mia.”

When Merylou glared at Mia, Mia smiled awkwardly, looking apologetic. Despite what he said, the warrior-looking man looked like he was trying to mess with Merylou. Maybe each of them had a target in mind.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know much about them either …… Full-time priest clerics seem to be rare, and I’ve had the occasional solicitation like that before.”

“…… Not being able to find a cleric or not, it’s obviously just a pick-up trick. That longhair was looking at Mia like this, with a dirty look.”

When Merylou stared at Mia’s growing breasts, Mia noticed her gaze and hurriedly covered her body with her hands.

“However, Souya is a celebrity now. It makes me very proud that I’m acquainted with the Demon Slayer too.”

“I hope you don’t spread the word too much. And Merylou-kun. You had every right to call yourself that.”

“I don’t need such an undeserved title. The only one who deserves it is Souya. Give it up.”

Merylou and Mia were also part of the party that accomplished the demon slayer, so they had the right to call themselves that, but they both declined.

It was because they judged that the disadvantages of a title that was inappropriate to their abilities were greater than the advantages. Souya also wanted to decline, but the Adventurer’s Guild wanted to give the title to the person who had contributed the most to the party, so it was unanimously decided that Souya would take the title. He was not the only one to accomplish this, but if they had to give it to one person, it would have to be him.

“Well, it can’t be helped …… By the way, have you placed your order yet?”

Souya sat down and loosened the tie of his suit a little, feeling more breathless than usual.
