Chapter 91 - Going our own way

As the morning sun began to rise in the eastern sky, the adventurers were already ready to leave, and the wagons were making their way to the junction of Ilstadt and Lingen, a short distance down from the lodge.

The rain had stopped, and fortunately, the road surface seemed to allow the wagon to continue on its way.

Merylou, Mia, and Aisha went down the mountain road to escort the wagon driven by their clients, Peryton and Rams, back to Ilstadt. It’s a bad assumption, but if Tat had been involved in an accident last night, this would be the time to report to the Adventurer’s Guild.

Hans, the hunter from Lingen, was healed from his injuries by Aisha’s sacred magic, but he had suffered a great deal of psychological damage, so he was resting on the back of the wagon under Peryton’s arrangement. For the time being, he would try to rely on his relatives living in Ilstadt.

In the meantime, Souya and his familiar Shamil, continued along the mountain road to save the city of Lingen.

It was unclear whether the Silver Demon and the several Bronze Demon soldiers were still in the city, but if they were, it would be an opportunity to hunt down the Red Horn, Seran’s enemy. However, it was doubtful that Souya and Shamil would be able to compete with him, so they would have to be flexible in that area.

And what is the current state of Lingen, which was attacked by demons and engulfed in flames? It was hard to say until I actually saw it, but if last night’s rain clouds had passed over Lingen, the flames that had attacked the city might have been extinguished. I hoped that would be the case.

“Peryton-san, I apologize for not being able to escort you on your way home.”

“No …… Souya-san, I admire your brave decision …… Please take care of Lingen for me.”

The expression on Peryton’s face was dark as he muttered. Perhaps it is not the reduction in the number of guards that is bothering him, but the fact that he has been in close contact with Lingen.

“Souya-san.”

Mia was looking up at Souya with concern. Next to her was Merylou with a complicated expression.

“Mia-kun. I can’t take you with me now. You should do what you have to do …… The escort are stretched thin with me and Tat-kun out. Be careful on your way home. I’ll see you in Ilstadt.”

“I understand. Please be safe, Souya-san …… I regret that I can’t help you in your need for healers.”

Mia muttered in regret, closed her eyes and said a short prayer.

It’s not like Souya and Shamil can use the sacred arts like Mia and Aisha. There are some magic techniques that can promote healing, but they are less efficient than sacred magic and do not work as quickly. It was impossible to heal a large number of injured people.

That was why we needed a good healer like her, but it was too risky considering the strong enemy we had to expect. Even for Souya, he should have waited for the Adventurer’s Guild reinforcement and join them.

Even so, Souya’s decision to go to Lingen alone may have been prompted by last night’s Tale of the Six Heroes, the disappearance of the Golden Hero and the White Saint, and the actions of Tat, the Grasswalker boy.

I think the wood elf girl in front of me, Merylou, could read my true intentions. It was her words that encouraged me to make my decision.

“Merylou-kun. If anything should happen, take care of Mia-kun.”

“I can’t accept that request. I won’t do anything you ask me to do. You must swear to me that you will return from Lingen alive.”

Merylou glared at Souya, who smiled thinly, and bluntly said, then lowered the hood of the cloak and turned her back to Souya. Realizing that he had made her angry with his careless remarks, Souya held his glasses with his fingers and sighed a little.

“I would like to ask you both to please rest assured. I, Shamil, will surely lead my master to Ilstadt.”

Shamil, dressed in a tailcoat transformed into a human figure, leaning back diagonally, spread his arms out like wings and smiled.

He could be a boy or a girl, with an androgynous, supple body. And big eyes like a cat’s.

“…… Oh, right, I heard that you made him into your familiar. He said his name is Shamil. Apparently, he’s a Cait Sith, but can you trust him?”

“…… We only talked a little last night. Basically, I’m going to trust him. And he’ll have to follow me. That’s what the Familiar is for.”

(…… That said. It’s a little different from what I was expecting.)

Soya looked sideways at Shamil without changing his expression. Shamil smiles when he notices my gaze.

In contrast to last night’s haughty attitude, he behaved with a sense of propriety. Souya felt that this change was uncanny and was wondering how he should treat him in the future. If he is too much of a follower, he might change his attitude.

“Souya-san. It’s Hans-san!”

Aisha, who had been checking on Hans’ condition, came from the wagon and brought a rolled up piece of parchment, looking flustered.

“…… From the hill in front, you can see the whole city of Lingen. He said it might be a good idea to take a look from there before you go in.”

When Souya took the parchment and opened it, he found a simple hand-drawn map of what appeared to be the area around Lingen.

“…… I see, the giant cedar tree is a landmark. Thank you …… It had been a long time since I had been to Lingen. I had little memory of it. Thank you.”

“I’m sure Souya-san can handle it, after all. Oh …… No. Please be safe ……!”

Aisha’s eyes were shining. It must be the attitude of knowing that he’s one of the Six Heroes, the Silver Rei.

She’s overestimating me too much. There is no way that a twenty-year gap can be filled so easily. And the fact that she was behaving in a way that made him wonder if she was uptight or not, made Souya frown. It may be that one more seed of trouble has been added.

◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇

After watching the back of the wagon head down the mountain road, Souya turned around and began to walk quickly down the mountain road towards Lingen. Shamil followed a short distance behind.

Souya’s long day to rescue Lingen was about to begin.
