Chapter 7 Part 1 : A Declaration Of War

The next day, I was in the library with Eva, reading a book.

I was reading as normal, and Eva, in her normal little form, opened the book and started to read, I’m not sure whether she could understand what it said or not.

The book I’m reading is about the Red Dragon.

The Red Dragon has become a mythical creaure. I looked for a book about them and was lucky enough to find one in the library.

It was a biography-style novel about the life of the mythical Red Dragon, Evangeline.

I figured it was better to read it than nothing, but perhaps because the latter half of Evangeline’s life was about her becoming the savior of humanity, the book was just about praising her as  an “Holy” creature.

It’s fascinating, but…

It’s okay that Evangeline – the main protagonist – is lauded and things do go well, because it’s more fun than watching her fail, but it didn’t add a single millimeter of information about the Red Dragon’s biology, abilities, and characteristics.

“Kyu?”

In response to my murmur, Eva over here lifted her head and peered at me.

“I just thought it would be nice to find a book about red dragons.”

I said, caressing Eva’s head.

When I stroked her, she pressed her whole body against mine, expressing her happiness.

That made me happy, too, and I stroked her more.

It’s been less than a day since we met, but I’ve gotten used to petting Eva.

I think I should stop reading for the day and take Eva out to play with me.

I was getting ready to do just that when…

“Oh, there you are, Mateo.”

“Grandpa?”

I could tell by the voice and tone of voice that my grandfather was here again.

I turned toward the voice – toward the door – and another elderly man had shown up with him.

Who is that man?

“Look, it’s Ruth, the one I always talk about.

“The Marquis of Wolfe?”

I was so startled that I stood up and hastily bowed.

He’s the  most distinguished person I’ve ever met.

…… No, my grandfather is a duke, and he’s more powerful than the Marquis, but my grandfather dote’s on his grandson, me, and I don’t think of him as a great man at all because he’s an old fool.

So, the Marquis Wolfe is the most distinguished person I’ve ever met in my life, including my life before.

“He’s very well mannered. And he seems like a clever boy.”

“Of course he is, he’s my grandson. He’s the wisest boy in the world.”

“What do you mean?!, the smartest girl in the world is my granddaughter!”

“What? I admit that your granddaughter is beautiful, but she can’t be any smarter than Mateo.”

“What do you mean! There is no one in the world smarter than Lynn”

“What?”

“You want to do it?”

The two old men were scowling at each other at eye level, so close that their foreheads were touching, and sparks were flaring.

They were both bragging about their grandchildren, and I felt as if I had two grandfathers in my life.

I didn’t know much about the Marquis of Wolfe, but I had a feeling that he wasn’t much better than gramps.

Grandson and granddaughter.

If I take that out of the equation, I’d say the granddaughter is probably more adorable.

Well, that was all I had to say.

“Okay, I’ll bring Lynn next time. Let’s see who’s smarter right then and there.”

“As you wish.”

The buzzing sparks were put off in an irksome way.

But if you ask me, I don’t like this idea at all.

From what the two old men said, Lynn and I are about the same age, but I’m actually a grown man.

I don’t want to compete with a young child, even if we look the same and everything is fine.

But I know my grandfather well. I’ve heard a lot of stories about the Marquis of Wolfe, and now I’m actually seeing it firsthand.

I guess I need to actually do something. …… I heaved a little sigh.

“But more importantly,……, is that the dragon?”

The topic of debate changed abruptly, and the Marquis of Wolfe looked at Eva beside me.

This is a great way to get the most out of your business.

“It look’s like a puppy, doesn’t it? Are you sure that’s it’s a Red Dragon?”

“It is indeed. I’m sorry, Mateo, but I guess you’ll have to show this ignorant man some proof.

” The proof …… Yeah, all I need to know is that it’s a red dragon, right?”

“Yes.”

Then let’s go out into the garden, it’s too small here.

“Right. Good.”

“Ok”

The two old men led the way, I followed behind, and Eva walked briskly next to me.

“Once we were out in the open, Marquis Wolff asked me, “So what are we going to do here”

What am I gonna do now u ask?

“Just watch. It’s Mateo after all”

“Yes! Okay!”

“I nodded widely, crouched down and touched Eva’s paw”.

“Here we go.”

“Kyuu!”
