Xi Yao straightened her back and looked in their direction, so exhausted she was about to kneel on the ground. She clenched her silvery-white teeth, face full of discontent.

Educated youths are often like this.

Both male and female educated youths haven’t worked much if they had lived in the village for less than a year. So, they didn’t possess the qualifications to disturb the working male villagers.

Xi Yao was so tired her eyes rimmed with tears. As she heard the exuberant voices, she felt even more bitter.

She had intentionally knocked into Su Jiaojiao before. If it wasn’t for her, why would she have to live with the Song family? Even if she was weak in the beginning, it would pay off if she could retaliate. However, the Song family members think not getting a benefit is equivalent to receiving a loss. So, they treated Xi Yao especially terribly.

[Translator (Armos D. Platypus): I’m not sure if the TL of this was clear. Basically, Xi Yao isn’t treated well by the Song family members because they perceive Xi Yao as a detriment as she’s another mouth to feed.]

Although they didn’t dare assault her verbally, they insulted her directly all the time. Don’t even talk about how her life was greatly inconvenienced. Back then, she could bat her eyelashes a little, and a group of men would come to her aid.

However, when she was living in the Song family, not only did no one in the family help her, they even hindered her. Whenever a male educated youth visited her, he would be talked about by the Song family. Not only that, Song Qingshan also leered at her disgustingly all the time.

Originally, she would have lived at Song Qinghan’s. Song Qinghan was much better than his younger brother if you look at both their appearances alone.

Xi Yao was incredibly exhausted and went towards a shaded area while rubbing her head. Her eyes wandered to the educated male youths’, hoping to find someone she took a fancy to.

At this moment, a genteel-looking teen straightened his back and stood up, looking straight at her. Both of them looked at each other simultaneously, Xi Yao’s eyes containing a trace of shyness. The aches on her body had flown away like magic.

But their eyes only met for a short time. Then, the two of them moved their gazes away quickly.

The place Xi Yao was sitting at was two meters away from where Su Jiaojiao was. As Xi Yao’s mood wasn’t bad, she glanced at them and heard some of what she was saying.

I think…they were talking about what to eat at Su Jiaojiao’s?

Xi Yao’s heart was moved. She perked up her ears at listened to their conversation. Her eyes were looking at her fingers, but she was looking at them. She saw a girl look at her surroundings fearfully and something under her breath.

She didn’t hear what the girl said, but Su Jiaojiao nodded after the girl stopped speaking. Joy was shown on her face instantly, and she even licked her lips.

Xi Yao’s eyes slanted down as she plucked out a blade of grass. Her hands, now full of minuscule scars, were incomparable to her previously white and soft digits. And now even a village girl was living a better life than her?

So it was like that…

Su Jiaojiao didn’t stay at the educated youths’ for long.

The girls in the village by and large envied Su Jiaojiao. On top of that, this body’s original owner wasn’t a nice person to talk to. The only person who would speak about her nicely would be Zhang Yu. Su Jiaojiao had been to the Zhangs’ twice recently. However, she was busy with something or another most of the time; although they weren’t very exhausting, she couldn’t stop most of the time. Thus, she didn’t visit Zhang Yu often.

On the other hand, she was able to talk to these educated female youths just fine. However, what they talked about was either food or the contents of their schoolwork.

They were all anticipating the day when the gaokao (China version of SATs) would resume.

Of course, the people who anticipated it most were the new arrivals to the village. The educated youths who had been lived there longer had gone numb to that possibility.

Su Jiaojiao knew what would happen in the future and was confident that the gaokao would resume. Thus, she could talk about that with the educated female youths.

After chatting for a while, Su Jiaojiao returned home.

Back then, the educated youths wanted to eat different things. One wanted to eat liangpi (cold noodles or something), another wanted to eat braised meat, and the rest wanted an iced bowl of green bean soup.

After recording all of that, Su Jiaojiao went back home and started making the food.

Because of what Su Jiaojiao said earlier (see chapter 29), Song Qinghan didn’t fish today. After she returned home, he helped her make the food.

Today is the third day after Song Qinghan had taken off the plaster on his legs. Although he still couldn’t walk under his own power, moving was a less challenging task now. He could even stand on his own without using crutches for a while! So, Song Qinghan worked with much vigour, “Let me do it. You go rest.”

Su Jiaojiao sat at one side smilingly, and she really didn’t have to work after that, and just said, “This needs to be cleaned more thoroughly.”

“Ok.”
