Chapter 143 – Glasses boy is shaken by the shocking truth

The meal of Adyll, the ruler of the brothel district, and Beckenberg, the richest man of the glory district, began.

They started with wine, then came some soup as an appetizer.

Their meal seemed to be a peaceful and elegant one at first glance.

“That medicinal herb’s price is fluctuating. An epidemic might be happening in the Great Empire.” Adyll commented.

“No, it’s not an epidemic. They’re using it as a preventive measure. It seems they were successful in stopping an epidemic from starting.” Beckenberg replied.

“I see. Either way, we won’t be able to get much of it.” Adyll said.

“It might be a good idea to start looking for some in the wild, or maybe to start planting them.” Beckenberg suggested.

“We have to secure a sufficient amount before winter comes.” Adyll replied.

At first, the mood was pretty awkward, but then old lady Adyll and the fat bald Beckenberg started talking about something that was quite complicated.

The feeling that they were giving off, was that they were not allies, but they could still be business partners.

If I were to think of this city as a store, then Adyll and Beckenberg would be its owners.

Both are trying to keep the city alive, while putting their interests and profits in the forefront.

If they stopped giving and killed the city, then they would be unable to make any more money.

But if they give too much, then a new ruler might emerge.

Those two seem to be ruling the lawless country while trying to maintain a perfect balance between supply and demand.

They aren’t working with good intentions, nor are they doing good deeds.

It’s simply the search for profit. And they try to manage their conflicting interests in order to obtain that.

Also, I’m sure they’d get rid of the other if they had the chance.

However, the fact that the city is still running and maintains a certain level of order is largely thanks to these two people.

Are they a necessary evil, perhaps?

I don’t understand those difficult things.

But I understand that we can only live our normal lives because there are some people controlling the country… And those two are filling the role of the people in control.

… Anyways, Beckenberg is strange.

His hair is thin, and he is incredibly fat. He doesn’t seem to be intelligent at all.

The feeling he gives off is a very rough one. The kind of feeling you’d get from people who easily pass out while drinking at cheap bars.

And yet, he is currently talking about some really complicated things with old lady Adyll.

I think he must be around forty to fifty years old.

He may not seem like an intelligent person, but he does seem to be quite energetic.

Or rather, his auburn eyes are filled with the power to live. They shine with the energy of a hungry beast.

And he doesn’t seem to have a limit to how much he can eat.

Even though he is this fat, he still seems to be eating non-stop, as if the act of eating was a way of fulfilling his greedy desires.

I’ve never seen someone this ambitious.

He truly feels like the ruler of the lawless country.

But putting that aside… I’m more curious about Lisse than I am about Beckenberg.

******

Lisse glared at me at first, but she’s now just standing there in a bad mood.

Well, I’m in a similar situation myself.

I just stood here without doing anything, waiting for old lady Adyll to finish her meal.

It’s pretty boring, but as I’m her bodyguard, I’m not gonna let my guard down.

And Lisse… Probably did not recognize me.

She didn’t seem to take much notice of me. She didn’t pay more attention than normal to me, and she was now just idly wasting her time.

That’s why I think she probably didn’t notice it.

Making a disguise for this kind of occasion was worth it.

“By the way, Adyll, is that maid a newcomer?” Beckenberg asked.

“… You also hired an unfamiliar bodyguard.” Adyll replied.

“That girl is a guest of the Tower of Bryne. Your maid is too, isn’t she?” Beckenberg said.

Oh, the topic came to us.

Seems like the topic of profits has come to an end, and they have now decided to talk about a different thing.

Well, maybe this too is about profits.

Old lady Adyll stared at Lisse for a second, snorted, then said, “You don’t like this fat guy, do you?

“It’s written all over your face; you’re obviously obeying him reluctantly.

“Why don’t you come to my house instead?”

“Hey. Don’t try to steal my property right in front of me.” Beckenberg replied.

I agree with him.

I mean, I don’t care about Beckenberg’s wealth, but I’ll be in trouble if Lisse starts living under the same roof as me.

The mansion may be large, but there’s no way I won’t get caught if we live together.

“Well, you’re not wrong about it, to be honest… And on that matter, I actually wanted your help with something.” Beckenberg stated.

“Help? With something related to this girl?” Adyll asked.

“This girl wants to kill Zet.” Beckenberg replied.

… Huh?

Zet? The leader of the criminal gang?

Lisse wants to kill him…?

… How? Why?

“Apparently, one of the friends that came here with her was killed by Zet. She wants to avenge them.” Beckenberg stated.

… What?

Zet… Killed one of the friends that came here with us? Did I hear this right…?

******

Sorichika certainly did say that some trainees died shortly after arriving at the lawless country.

That this kind of thing happens once every few years.

Did it happen this time?

Hold on…

I have to keep my emotions from coming out… Or rather, I was desperately trying to not let them come out.

But my inner turmoil was incredible.

My heart was throbbing unpleasantly fast, and I had a hard time thinking clearly.

I honestly didn’t know that I could become this upset.

Who was it?

Who was killed?

Chace? Cherry? Florentine?

“Such a pity… So that brat finally started killing?” Adyll commented.

“He has certainly become an annoying fly.

“Even though he should have been a maggot that crawled around on the ground forever.” Beckenberg replied.

Lisse’s expression became even more sour now that the topic of Zet was brought up.

And judging from her reaction, Beckenberg’s words seem to be truthful.

Or at the very least, she believes him to be telling the truth.

I want to ask Lisse and Beckenberg about it right now, but I cannot.

I’m here as Adyll’s bodyguard.

I cannot do something that would trouble her, even if I have things that are extremely important to me that I want to take care of.

If I make a mistake in prioritizing the right things, everything might fall apart.

It would be different if Zet was here, right now, but he is not.

Even if I knew the truth, I wouldn’t be able to do anything.

Retaliation may come later. Now is the time to stay calm.

Though if this is really the truth, then I cannot ignore it.

“So, do you know where that brat is? I wanted your help in finding him.” Beckenberg asked.

“If you cannot find him, then there is no way I’ll be able to find him either.

“I’ll contact you if he comes to the brothel district.” Adyll replied.

Zet, the leader of the criminal group.

I now have some personal business with him.

Though it’s probably a bit too early to meet him.

There’s no way he’ll just appear right as those two finish eating.
