Chapter 144 – Glasses boy meets Zet

Beckenberg held up a simple ignition device with a magic core embedded inside it.

It was something small and made of metal, and it emanated a small flame. Beckenberg was using to light up the cigar that he was holding in his mouth.

I had never heard of this device before, but later on I heard that its name was ‘lighter’.

Then, he let out a deep breath, and some purple smoke rose up with it.

It smelled strange. It was a bad smell with something faintly sweet mixed with it.

Some people in my village did smoke tobacco stuffed in pipes, but this was my first time seeing a cigar.

It seems like the kind of thing that rich people would enjoy… I wonder what it feels like.

And if it’s expensive…

Well, regardless of the price, stuff like cigars are luxury items, so a poor person like me has nothing to do with them.

… And Lisse, who was standing behind Beckenberg, took a step back.

Seems like she doesn’t like the smell.

In any case, both Beckenberg and old lady Adyll finished eating, but they still didn’t leave their seats.

Beckenberg asked for an unfamiliar liquor, probably a high-class one, and stayed there, as if he still had something to say.

… But neither him nor old lady Adyll said anything.

Beckenberg puffed up some more smoke as he tilted the transparent glass filled with amber-colored liquor that was poured down for him.

This was strange…

That man had a round head, fat neck, and a protruding belly. He was as far from a cool man as one could be.

Though maybe, he could be called a bit elegant.

Slowly drinking alcohol, occasionally nibbling on some fruits, and enjoying a cigar. He did feel like a proper grown man.

He was not cool in the slightest, but he could emanate some elegance. I guess he is a middle-aged man that went through his fair share of hardships.

… And both him and old lady Adyll remained silent.

Old lady Adyll has always felt fairly elegant, so her impression didn’t change here.

She was currently drinking the same liquor as Beckenberg.

I wondered if the two still had something to talk about, but they kept on drinking in silence…

Honestly, I’d prefer it if they could enjoy their drinking in their homes.

If you aren’t going to do anything, then let’s go home.

Even if I’m a bodyguard, it’s hard to just stay idle while other people waste their time.

… Though well, just as I had those thoughts, I learned why they were staying there in silence.

******

Me and Lisse moved almost simultaneously.

We placed ourselves in-between the entrance and the table where old lady Adyll and Beckenberg were sitting at.

As I moved, I automatically picked up a fork from a nearby empty table too.

I felt like just my knife wouldn’t be enough.

I am confident enough in my abilities that I believe I can handle most situations with just my bare hands, but…

I never thought that this kind of enemy would come here.

A man screamed in pain.

He was flung inside from the store’s entrance.

He seemed to be one of the adventurer-like men that were standing guard outside.

His body violently opened the entrance door as he fell down on the floor.

“Hey, you old troublemakers! I’m here to play!” A young man entered through the open doorway.

I understood it with a single glance.

This guy is trouble.

Troublesome in multiple ways.

First of all, he is half-naked.

But more than that, he also gives off an extremely dangerous feeling.

So, let’s put the perverted part aside.

… Though there really are a lot of perverted people in this city, aren’t there? The perverted thief of the other day; young lady Seviarow and her fetishes; and now this half-naked man… There are just way too many perverts here.

Anyways… This guy is strong.

Very strong.

The pressure that he gives off is similar to what I felt when facing the Obsidian Wolf.

Lisse and I were cautious specifically because of this pressure.

I checked just in case, but… Unsurprisingly, the number atop his head was 0. I cannot win in a proper fight.

Him being half-naked is also a problem.

He is wearing black leather pants alright, but he is wearing nothing on the upper portion of his body.

He is probably still in his teens. He must be a year or two older than me and Lisse.

This man may not be young, but he doesn’t look like an adult yet. His face does not feel like the face of an old person.

His body isn’t large. His physique is that of someone who is about medium height.

Though this half-nakedness is a problem.

He also has plenty of flashy tattoos, whose motif I cannot comprehend, all over his toned, muscular upper body.

I’m sure he is shirtless just to show off those tattoos that he must be quite proud of.

His white-blond hair is kept untidy. It’s cut short in a very careless way, and his grey eyes show no intelligence whatsoever.

Or rather, they emanated the kind of madness I’d expect to see in an angry animal or Demon Beast.

And he isn’t carrying any weapons, on top of being half-naked.

So, even with his bare hands, he can still emanate a pressure that reminds me of the Obsidian Wolf…

Though I’m not sure if he is as strong as that wolf or not…

I have no doubt that he is strong, but I have a hard time accurately reading his strength.

“Hey, fat guy. Did you use this place as a bait?” Adyll asked.

“Hah? You promised to cooperate just a small while ago, didn’t you?” Beckenberg replied.

“Because you’d be owning me a favor, right?” Adyll told him.

“I know. I don’t think you’ll be losing anything here, Adyll.” Beckenberg said.

Unfazed by the commotion, those two had this kind of conversation.

So, unsurprisingly… This person is Zet?

He is more dangerous than I expected.

And he’s also the one who…

******

“Did I keep you waiting?” The half-naked man walked straight towards us.

The adventurer-like man groaned, for Zet stomped on him as he moved forward.

Zet laughed, “How about it? Is this a good way to meet up with the evil kid that you were interested in?”

It was a tense moment.

If Zet did something hostile or strange, both me and Lisse were going to attack him.

But he casually walked past us, unguarded, while making a strange joke, then sat down at the table.

As if to say we weren’t people he needed to pay any attention to.

“Hey, hold on a second.” Lisse said.

She’s surely aware that this man is Zet.

And so is Beckenberg.

“Let me talk to him for a bit. Don’t do anything yet.” Beckenberg told Lisse.

… As in, she can do whatever she wants once the conversation is over.

Honestly, I don’t think I can win here… I may be a bodyguard, but if I can’t win, then I will have to run away with old lady Adyll.

So, for now… I guess I should stay behind her.

“I hadn’t heard of such a rude brat being invited.” Old lady Adyll told Zet.

She was still as calm as usual.

Meanwhile, Zet was acting as if he owned the place. He even put his feet on top of the table.

“But you were waiting for me, weren’t you?” Zet grinned at Adyll, “Otherwise, you wouldn’t have stayed this long in here. Especially not after leaking the information that you were going to meet here tonight, right?

“I’ve just come as you wanted me to, you know?”

I see…

So that’s why they were drinking in silence. They were waiting for Zet.

“The one who was waiting was that fat guy over there.” Adyll gestured towards Beckenberg with her head.

“Ah, seriously? That’s boring. I’d rather meet up with an old hag than with a fat bald man, you know? I was taught to be nice to women.” Zet commented.

Adyll laughed, “Well, are you still at the age where you miss hearing lullabies? I can sing one in front of your grave for you.”

Zet laughed too, “You’re still as funny as ever, hag. I have plenty of time, so I can handle you later.” then, he turned towards Beckenberg, “So, you were the one who called me, right?”

“Well…” Beckenberg muttered as he watched the smoke rise from his cigar.

Then, he pressed the cigar’s flame against an ashtray, and continued, “Not exactly. I just wanted to crush an annoying fly.”

Beckenberg then glared at Zet, “You are going to die soon.”

… Amazing.

Beckenberg isn’t strong at all. He is definitely an amateur with no fighting skills.

… But what’s up with this glare?

It’s emanating the kind of intimidating feeling that only a strong person can give off.

Is this the power of a ruler of the lawless country?

I’m sure he has gone through many life-threatening situations.

He can probably emanate this kind of pressure due to all the multiple dangerous situations that he bargained his way out.

But Zet started laughing.

He seemed to be completely unfazed.

“Who’s gonna be scared of this kind of threat in this shithole?

“Come on, if you have something you want to do, then do it already, old man. I’m getting bored here.” Zet told him.

Beckenberg snorted.

Then, he threw the liquor bottle on the table.

The bottle cracked with a loud noise.

I’m sure that was a signal.

******

“Oh, I forgot to mention it.

“The small fries around the restaurant were in the way, so I cleaned them up. That was why I arrived late.” Zet stated.

When I was entering this restaurant, and even after I was inside, I didn’t feel the presence of anybody in the surroundings.

In other words, Beckenberg hired people that were good enough at hiding their presence, to the point that even I couldn’t notice them.

As in, the whole purpose of this meeting was to set up a trap to kill Zet.

But the people who were meant to ambush him have already fallen, so no help came.

This… Is giving me a pretty bad feeling.

“… Oh well, have a drink.” Beckenberg stated.

Beckenberg was sweating cold right now. His feelings were clearly visible on his face… He messed up.

“I don’t need any alcohol provided by some old troublemakers.” Zet said.

Then, he slowly put down his foot back on the floor.

And immediately after that, he grabbed Beckenberg by the collar.

He was fast.

But more importantly than that, I could barely notice any fluctuation in his emotions.

I couldn’t react to it at all.

It never occurred to me that he would act now.

“You were going to kill me, so it’s fine if I kill you now, right?” Zet’s bloodlust exploded.

This is bad.

It’s really bad.

I won’t be able to do anything in time.

I was just a moment too late.

But…

Lisse, who must have been waiting for this moment, was quick enough.

******

“Whoa!” Zet exclaimed.

He barely dodged Lisse’s sword strike, which was going to mercilessly cut off the arm that he was using to hold Beckenberg in place.

Zet jumped backwards and kept his distance.

… Is it even possible to avoid such a fast strike in such a short time? Is he even human?

… Ah, well, I’m sure the assassin instructors could all do that if they tried.

Still, it’s amazing… This guy is way too strong.

“That was dangerous. You were serious about it, weren’t you?

“Now, this has just gotten interesting.” Zet grinned.

He seemed to have finally recognized Lisse as an enemy.

“You don’t need to talk.” Lisse replied, “I don’t want to talk to you. I don’t care to learn about the how or the why.”

She lifted her sword.

Lisse was showing a very clear murderous intent right now.

It’s different from anything I’ve ever felt from her. Different from what she was like in Haidiga, in the assassins’ village, or in the hunts for Demon Beasts.

“Right here. Right now. I will definitely kill you.” She stated.

Her sharp sword-like bloodlust was aimed directly at Zet.

“And avenge Eil.” She said.

… Huh?

… Come again?

… What? Me? Why did my name come up now?

… Eh!?

No way. Are you telling me that our dead friend is me!?

******

“You. Enemy of Chace, Cherry and Florentine… I will definitely kill you.” Lisse stated.

… Eh!? Them too!? For real!?

Come on! Everyone!? You mean that he killed everyone!?

Hey, this is a bit…

Suddenly… The credibility of her grudge has plummeted.

Lisse, are you sure you aren’t misunderstanding something?

Or rather… Weren’t you deceived?
