Chapter 7: Work

Xie Sen stood up and shook his head, “I’m not a caretaker.”

The man in white gave a soft ah, looked in surprise at the cat rubbing against Xie Sen’s pant leg, and smiled gently. “You’re very good at calming it down, better than many caretakers I’ve seen.”

Xie Sen, “…”

He didn’t do anything! The critters did like him after he had the Plant System. Adam had said that it came from the animals’ closeness to nature.

The man in blue bowed slightly, and walked gingerly to Xie Sen, his eyes glued to the cat the whole time, to make sure it didn’t escape. His glowing red eyes lit up and he squatted down, as he reached for the cat.

“Meow!” Just as he was dragging the cat outside, and the cat was about to lose contact with Xie Sen, the cat gave a short, slightly grumpy meow.

The man in blue stopped moving, at a loss. The cat jumped off his hand, and returned to Xie Sen’s feet to continue rubbing his head against them.

“Manager Yang, what should we do?” The man in blue turned back to inquire. He looked dejected. “It’s the Persian beast that I have the highest empathy for, and it seems to dislike me.”

The man in white walked up, observed the cat for a moment, and said in a warm voice, “It’s not that it doesn’t like you, it probably has some physical discomfort.”

After that, he looked at Xie Sen. “Hello, my name is Yang Shun, I am the manager of Gold Medal. Can you please help us? Please carry it to our care center. I need to give it a body check,” he said, and pointed at the cat.

Xie Sen didn’t hesitate. He nodded his head, answered, and held the cat in his hands. The cat’s body instantly went limp, and seemed to want more contact with him.

Yang Shun said thanks, as he led the way. The man in blue and Xie Sen were walking side by side, the other full of envy. The cat was pillowed in Xie Sen’s arm, and was purring at him, its voice soothing and soft.

The man in blue said excitedly, “It’s purring at me! It likes me!”

Xie Sen gritted his teeth to keep from laughing. This man was definitely a cat slave! It didn’t take long to get to the care center. Xie Sen originally thought the care center was similar to the pet clinic in his previous life, but he didn’t expect it to cover a huge area, like a castle.

Most of the walls he had passed on the road before belonged to the care center.

Before he entered the door, he looked at the plaque in the middle of the front door. Gold Medal Contract Beast Care Center. He immediately looked at the cat in his hands, his eyes full of curiosity. So he had heard correctly before. The man in blue was really talking about a Persian beast, not a Persian cat!

Yang Shun led them to take the elevator on the left, and went straight to the third floor.

After they exited the elevator on the third floor, there was a large hall. The hall had a number of men with small animals, the men were mostly between 1.7 to 1.85 meters tall, while there were a few people next to a man who was more than 1.9 meters tall, and the two behaved very intimately.

“This is it.” After passing through the hall, Yang Shun pushed open the door of a room and led the way in.

The arrangement inside was very similar to a hospital, but the hospital bed was more suitable for cats. Xie Sen put the cat on the hospital bed according to Yang Shun’s instructions.

Yang Shun’s temperament was mild, but his work was fast, he quickly gave the result and said to the worried man in blue. “Not a big problem, just some heatstroke. He won’t like to be held at such times. He likes to stay in a spacious, ventilated and cool place. He’ll be fine after you guys tie the knot.”

“Mm-hmm, true. Thank you so much.”

Yang Shun said, “The caretaker will get him back to his best condition as soon as possible, and try to be able to tie the knot with you tomorrow.”

“I’m going back to make preparations!” The man in blue was surprised. He watched the cat being picked up by the caretaker, and placed in the air conditioning room before he left, full of fondness.

“Thank you for your help,” Yang Shun said to Xie Sen, his smile gentle. “You seem to be very popular with the Persian beast. I’m really surprised that he was willing to let you, someone who is a stranger, hold him when his temper had turned bad due to heatstroke.”

Xie Sen’s mind moved and he laughed, “Haha! I have a high affinity, and have always been quite popular with the little animals.”

“That’s great, you’re simply a natural born caretaker.”

Xie Sen looked surprised. He was thinking how to discuss it and the topic was perfect, “I’m so happy to hear you say that. Do you take part-time jobs in your care center? I’m looking for a job.”

“You are a contracted animal care major? Have you graduated?”

“No, I’m from the plant department, I’m a junior this year,” Xie Sen said positively. “I’ll learn seriously, I’m not afraid of hardship and tiredness.”

Yang Shun pondered for a moment. “We do need manpower, but Gold Medal is very strict in recruiting employees. Your qualifications aren’t good, but you have a high affinity, so maybe you can try.” He apologized, “I can’t give you a definite answer. Gold Medal recruiting is supervised by both the HR and Conservation departments. I can give you a recommendation, but you need to pass the test.”

Xie Sen’s job hunting process was too tortuous, and he didn’t care about his lack of experience. He had to grab this opportunity, and said gratefully, “Thank you. It’s good enough that you’ve given me a chance.”

Yang Shun took him to the HR department, where the HR manager asked for his information, then together with Yang Shun, took him to the first floor.

After passing through the artificial grove behind the building, the three came to a large one-story building. Yang Shun explained, “This is the E-class contract beast feeding area, which is full of contract beasts that have not found female masters.”

There were four security guards standing at the entrance, and after the identity verification was passed, the three entered the interior. Xie Sen walked and looked inside. It was extremely large and divided into many areas, with the name of the corresponding contract beast written on the gate of each area.

“This is the Persian beast area.” As they approached the zoning gate, the personnel manager took out a box of beast food and handed it to Xie Sen. “You take it to the corner, and feed them.”

Xie Sen was shocked to see a room full of Persian cats of all kinds. This was like a cat-con’s paradise. He wasn’t a cat fanatic, but who wouldn’t like cute little things? He took the food box and breathed a sigh of relief. Originally he thought the test would be difficult, but he didn’t expect it to be just feeding the cats.

Yang Shun explained to him in a gentle voice, “Contract beasts are very sensitive to smells. The most basic requirement for employees is not to be hated by contract beasts.”

Xie Sen went in with the food box, and the Persian beasts that were playing, sleeping, and stretching squinted at him. They weren’t paying attention until a cat scurried past Xie Sen’s feet,  then immediately turned back and happily rubbed his pants leg. Soon a succession of cats rubbed against him.

The HR manager was surprised, “He’s really popular!”

Yang Shun was also surprised. This affinity was far beyond his imagination.

Xie Sen finished feeding the cats smoothly, and the personnel manager brought him to the rest of the contract beasts section. Without any difference, each contract beast was very close to Xie Sen.

“You have good talent, but you are not a related major, so you need to learn a lot. We can give you a month of half-pay for internship, at fifteen star coins per hour, can you do it?” the personnel manager asked.

Xie Sen nodded his head repeatedly. He was happy to have a job.

The three of them returned to the care building and were about to take the elevator, when a sudden noise came from the right side and a choked male voice exclaimed, “How dare you call it Gold Medal! It’s so disappointing, I want to complain about you!”
