C43 – Gong Cheng vs Xu Jing

“Anyway, Dad, your priority should be finding my sister first. I can’t leave right now anyway,” Xu Yangyi sighed, conceding to the situation.

Xu Jing didn’t appear surprised. “Alright, if you face any challenges, just reach out to Hee Jingyan. I’ve been with him for an hour, and he seems reliable. He won’t disregard your needs.” He seemed like he was about to dismiss Xu Yangyi from the room. Xu Yangyi caught onto the implication and felt something was off. The corner of his mouth twitched, “Dad, what do you mean by that?”

Why did I get the feeling that he’s going to entrust me to Hee Jingyan? Is he being overly cautious?

In that moment, Xu Jing realized that his intention was too obvious. He quickly coughed to compose himself and said, “Nothing, Dad is just concerned that you might face difficulties alone in the army. I wanted to inform you beforehand.” Not good, it was almost heard by Yangyi. If Yangyi knew I had such thoughts, he would surely be furious. No, I mustn’t be so careless in the future for the sake of my own safety.

Xu Jing wiped off his cold sweat. He was indeed his father, yet he feared his own son. But then again, who can blame him? Xu Yangyi is just too terrifying.

“Dad still needs to work on a draft for the editor? In that case, let’s not talk further.” After Xu Jing finished speaking, he promptly hung up the phone. He was afraid of revealing too much, so he had no choice but to end the call.

After ending the call, Xu Jing finally breathed a sigh of relief. He turned to his editor and junior Gong Cheng, saying, “Taking care of Yangyi is truly a challenging task!”

Despite his complaints, Xu Jing’s expression darkened as he thought of his late wife. “It’s all because of my father’s incompetence. I couldn’t assist Yangyi in saving his mother, nor could I protect him.”

Gong Cheng, who was preparing tea on the side, noticed Xu Jing lowering his head and understood that he was reminiscing about his wife. He felt a sense of guilt towards Xu Yangyi and raised his sharp gaze. A peculiar expression flickered in his eyes, but it vanished quickly.

He handed the tea to Xu Jing and said, “Drink this!” Although his voice sounded cold, there was an intentional softness in his tone.

Meanwhile, Xu Jing wrapped his arms around Gong Cheng’s waist and nuzzled his face against his chest. “Gong Cheng is truly the best! He’s always warm like a winter jacket.” Despite being a thirty-year-old man, he still displayed childlike behavior.

In terms of appearance, both Xu Yangyi and his sister shared resemblances with Xu Jing, possessing delicate facial features. Due to Xu Jing’s youthful appearance, he seemed more like someone in their mid-twenties. Coupled with his personality, it gave off an impression of being younger, causing others to mistake him for an unmarried young man.

On the other hand, Gong Cheng, a few years younger, carried an air of maturity. With his tall and handsome stature, the two of them appeared as a perfect match.

Observing Xu Jing leaning against his chest, a trace of tenderness crossed Gong Cheng’s otherwise cold countenance. However, in the next moment, he spoke with a chilly tone, “You still have an hour left to finish writing.”

Hearing this, Xu Jing’s entire demeanor seemed to deflate instantly. He adjusted his glasses, which were perched on the bridge of his nose, and attempted to win favor with Ye Zichen by smiling. “Is tomorrow okay?”

However, Gong Cheng disregarded his attempt. He sat on the sofa next to Ye Zichen, sipping his coffee, and replied, “Not way.” There was no room for negotiation.

“Alright!” Xu Jing seemed to anticipate the response and could only force a bitter smile as he hurriedly worked on the paperwork. He appeared quite pitiful.

Gong Cheng, who observed the situation from the side, simply smiled without uttering a word. Just then, he received a message from Xu Yangyi. After reading it, the smile on his face grew even wider because Xu Yangyi had asked him to take care of Xu Jing.

It could be said that Gong Cheng and Xu Yangyi had known each other for a very long time. Xu Yangyi had formed an impression of Gong Cheng since childhood, ever since he became aware of his surroundings. Xu Yangyi could be said to have grown up alongside Gong Cheng, almost like siblings, just as Xu Nuannuan did.

That was why Xu Jing would act childishly and seek comfort from Gong Cheng. Perhaps Xu Jing’s anxious personality stemmed from Wu Shuang, because whenever something occurred, a phone call from Xu Jing would immediately be handled by Gong Cheng.

As for Xu Yangyi’s marriage to Hee Jingyan, Gong Cheng happened to be out of the country, leaving poor Xu Yangyi to miss the opportunity for Gong Cheng’s assistance.
