Chapter 10 - Turned the Male Lead Green (10)

For Ruan Yan, PE wasn’t anything special.

Although the teacher would make the girls do the 800m run which made many of the girls pant and turn pasty white, Ruan Yan had a good physique that was much better than a majority of the girls.

He rested under the shade of a tree after he finished and Fang Yuan Yuan handed him a bottle of unopened water. “Yan Yan, drink some water. You won’t tan if you drink a lot of water. Your skin is so white, don’t waste it.”

Ruan Yan received the water and thanked her. He saw that Fang Yuan Yuan was having difficulty opening her bottle of water and helped her open it.

“Your relationship is so good.” Su Xue from Class One had just run over and generously sat beside them gently, “She was so tired from running but still saved you a bottle of water. Why don’t I have this kind of friend…”

Ruan Yan recognised her. This was Su Xue from Class One, Qin Lin High’s Grade Flower. Though she came from a poor family, her grades were very good, and her personality was nice. Even at the so called “noble’s” high school, she wasn’t self-abased.

At the same time, she was also the female lead of the ‘Overbearing School Idol’s Lovely Wife’ and was deep in love with Chu Nan.

Ruan Yan’s real personality was cold. Moreover, according to the task, he had to be hostile towards all pretty girls when he was acting as Ran Yan.

Because of this, he didn’t say anything and completely disregarded Su Xue.

Fang Yuan Yuan thought that the atmosphere was a bit awkward and said, “Yan Yan also looks after me a lot… You’ll definitely have a good friend like this too.”

Su Xue acted as if she hadn’t been ignored. She saw that Ruan Yan didn't look tired at all, and that there wasn’t even a single drop of sweat on his head, saying to Fang Yuan Yuan with a slight smile, “I’m really envious of you guys, but your friend doesn’t seem thirsty at all. You have so much sweat on your head, do you need to drink some more water?”

She handed her own water over to Fang Yuan Yuan, barely avoiding saying that Ruan Yan wasn’t being sensible outright.

Fang Yuan Yuan hurriedly waved her hand, “No, no. No need, I’m not thirsty right now.”

“The sweat on her forehead is because of doing the 800m sprint. No matter how much water she drinks it won’t immediately disappear. She needs to slowly rest.” Ruan Yan coldly said from the side, “It isn’t good to drink a lot of water after exercising.”

His personality was cold and self-restrained, and he rarely showed care like this for other people. Adding on to his natural good looks, if Ruan Yan were to speak like this before, he would have receive a large number of shrieks from girls who thought that his caring boyfriend quality had exploded.

But now that he was saying this as Ran Yan, Fang Yuan Yuan only thought that although her friend was slightly delicate, she knew how to treat her well. She really was a good bestie.

Su Xue felt as if she’d been slapped in the face (1) by Ruan Yan.

Su Xue’s grades were good and her person was pretty. Her poor relatives all said that she was a golden phoenix who’d flown out from a mountain ravine. Qin Lin High’s male students were also very nice to her, thus, as one may well imagine, she was actually very prideful.

Chu Nan was the only guy who’d ever rejected her.

Yet this exact guy, was said to have his eye on their year’s last place, Ruan Yan.

Su Xue’s smile turned extra warm, “What you said is right. I think I’ve seen you before, are you called Ruan Yan?”

Ruan Yan heard a hint of intention within this warm and gentle voice.

In the original script, once Su Xue had heard that Chu Nan was getting close to Ran Yan, she’d attempted to get closer to Ran Yan and see if she was worthy of Chu Nan.

Of course, after being humiliated by Ran Yan, it had served for Su Xue to become even more unyieldingly loyal to her affections.

Ruan Yan tried his best to stick to the original script. His intelligence was not just limited to studying, but also excelled at stimulating people. “I’m Ran Yan. Older Sister, do you have a problem?”

Older Sister?

Su Xue’s smile turned numb for a moment, “We should be the same age… It’s like this, I’ve heard about you a long time ago and wanted to make friends with you. After seeing you remain so calm after running 800m, your body must be very healthy and I think that you’re very awesome…”

Su Xue thought, if she got close to Ran Yan, then how could Chu Nan still not see her?

Chu Nan was merely not close to girls and hadn’t been enlightened yet. He’d mistaken a fish eye for a pearl and as long as the fish eye and the pearl were put together to compare, then Chu Nan would eventually realise whose glow was brighter.

“Wait a moment.” Ruan Yan suddenly said. He got up and took a bottle of water, walking towards the sports field.

Su Xue watched as Ruan Yan who’d been fine just then, suddenly put a hand over his chest and took on the appearance of a willow branch trembling in the wind.

“Chu Nan.” Ruan Yan ran over ‘panting’, forcing his face red as he lightly gasped.

Chu Nan’s eyes turned dark. He’d only just adjusted his state and now, as soon as Ruan Yan came over, all his efforts turned to dust.

“Yan Yan.” Chu Nan tried his best not to look at him, “Why are you so tired?”

“Ran the 800m sprint…” Ruan Yan handed the bottle of water over to Chu Nan, his long and thin eyebrows lightly trembling, “I’m thirsty. Can’t open the bottle.”

“Spoilt.” Chu Nan took the bottle of water and handed it back to him after twisting the lid open, “Drink slowly.”

Su Xue who’d watched Ruan Yan expressionlessly open the bottle: …

She didn’t dare to believe that Chu Nan actually liked this type of green tea b***h?

Ruan Yan took the bottle of water back with him. Su Xue could feel the heaven shaking scent of a b***h as soon as his peach blossom eyes curved.

He said in a pampered voice, “Older Sister, sorry about that ah~ I’m afraid that I can’t be friends with you. I get tired from just running 100m and I can’t open my water bottle. Every time I have to trouble Chu Nan to help me open it, it’s so annoying ah~”

Anyone could hear the flaunting in his voice.

Su Xue was angered to the point of getting up and leaving immediately. Why was Chu Nan so blind?!

Fang Yuan Yuan stared with her mouth open at the side, “Yan Yan, you’re too awesome! You really are the fighter plane amongst us women!”

As soon as that Su Xue came, she started picking at her and Yan Yan’s relationship. Who did she think she was concealing it from? Moreover, it seemed like that there was a possibility between Yan Yan and Chu Nan. Everyone in Qin Lin High knew that Su Xue had always liked Chu Nan.

Straight-Man-Ruan-Yan listened to this sincere praise and his heart produced a tiny bit of guilt which lasted for less than 3 seconds before quickly returning to normal.

After all, he was only doing it for the task.

Ruan Yan took a glance over at the sports field and found that Chu Nan was still playing basketball there. If he knew that he was only using him to bully his future girlfriend, he didn’t know what else he would scold him as.

Happiness never lasted long, and PE quickly ended. The last period was Maths.

Ruan Yan’s strong suit were his science subjects (TL: This includes maths) and he’d even noticed that the teacher had explained a part wrong. But now, he was acting as the school scum Ran Yan whose head was clouded with fog.

“There’s only two more weeks until the monthly test. Today we’ll have a look at last week’s weekly test results. Because of the situation with your class, I’ve lowered my standards. If you get below 80 points, you only have to copy the paper five times.”

Ruan Yan fell into deep thought. He recalled that he’d only gotten 4 marks for this particular paper, having only circled the correct answer for a multiple-choice question.

“Fang Yuan Yuan, 68 points.”

“Duan Lei, 62 points.”

“Chu Nan, 30 points.”

“Ran Yan… 4 points.” The maths teacher frowned, “Even if you only write the word ‘solution’ and draw an auxiliary line on your paper, you shouldn’t have only received 4 points, right?”

Ridiculing laughter rang out in the room and only stopped when Chu Nan knocked his hands against the table.

Ruan Yan’s face was red. He’d always been a study god. The taste of being humiliated before a large audience was something he’d never experienced before and wasn’t easy to bear.

The maths teachers face was dark as he called Ruan Yan to his staffroom after class.

Ruan Yan followed him out. Chu Nan also wanted to follow.

What would he do if she was scolded to the point of crying in the staffroom? That bunch of baldies (2) had hearts made of stone and were extremely vicious.

As soon as Chu Nan got up, Ju Ping quietly whispered, “Brother Chu, why are you going outside?”

“Smoking.” Chu Nan expressionlessly replied. He actually knew how to smoke, but he only did it occasionally and didn’t particularly like it.

Ju Ping replied, “Really? Brother Chu, you won’t be going to wait for Ran Yan, right? I advise you not to go.”

“Why? You’ll go if I don’t?” Chu Nan’s expression instantly darkened a lot, his eyes filled with frost.

He knew the he liked– really liked Ran Yan.

But it wasn’t the same kind of like as everything else. For example, Chu Nan also liked transformers, but he was willing to let Ju Ping and the others look at the models he collected. But Ran Yan… was his alone. Never mind touching her, even if it was secretly coveting her, the envy in Chu Nan’s heart would violently erupt.

Ju Ping was scared by that glance and secretly thought that it was no wonder that she was called “Attacking the Vast Sky with Yings” on Brother Chu’s penguin (3). As expected, the status really was different.

“Brother Chu, I definitely won’t go. I’m saying, didn’t the Director only just come looking for you? If you go now, you’ll definitely be caught in the act by the Director. By that time, your mum and dad will know too.”

“Just let them know then.” Chu Nan was filled with adrenaline. Even his veins were boiling with hot bloodedness.

“They wouldn’t only invite your parents here. Ran Yan would also suffer with you.” Ju Ping wondered why Brother Chu was so stupid now when he was usually quite smart.

Chu Nan clenched his fist. If Ran Yan’s parents were called in, he didn’t know how hard she would cry.

He took on Ju Ping’s suggestion and sat back down on his seat with the ferocity of a lion, his eyes boring holes at the entrance.

The bell rang for class to start but Ran Yan still did not return.

Chu Nan’s face worsened. For the entire period, everyone was trembling apprehensively. Even the teacher could not stand the pressure and took his books and ran as soon as the bell rang.

Even when the bell for last period sounded, Ran Yan still did not come back.

Chu Nan’s face turned white with anger and couldn’t stand it anymore. Randomly grabbing a test paper, he charged towards the staffroom.

Math teacher Zhang Jia looked at him, “Chu Nan, why are you looking for me?”

“Teacher, I have a question I don’t understand.” Chu Nan followed the script he prepared beforehand whilst actually focusing all his attention on searching for a trace of Ruan Yan’s shadow.

No one, did she go back?

“Chu Nan, you’re bringing a physics paper to ask about math’s?” Teacher Zhang’s face turned grave, “I thought that you were actually preparing to study, is this how you study?”

“Teacher, I brought the wrong paper. I’ll come back to find you tomorrow.”

Chu Nan ascertained that Ruan Yan wasn’t in the staffroom and immediately took the paper and left.

As soon as he left, he bumped into the white shirt, black pants, tall and jade like Ruan Yan.

Chu Nan glared at him unkindly. Ruan Yan stood in the corridor, the thin shards of sunlight lighting up his peach blossom eyes, as if even the bay laurel’s (4) were influenced by his warmth.

There was a test paper in Ruan Yan’s hand. Just as he brushed past Chu Nan’s shoulder–

“You also know how to study? The grades… second last place?” Ruan Yan’s own voice was cool and refreshing, sounding like a feather softly brushing past the galaxy when it reached the ear.

Chu Nan already couldn’t find Ran Yan, now he turned around and viciously glared at Ruan Yan, “Lao-zi has something on now, don’t force Lao-zi to do (5) you now.”

“Heh… Really?” Ruan Yan brushed past his shoulder and quietly whispered a sentence.

Chu Nan asked, “What are you saying?”

“Nothing.” Ruan Yan didn’t tell him. He’d said – I’m afraid you can’t bear to part with it.

But according to the original text, Chu Nan was purely straight (6). If he knew that Ran Yan was a man, then it was likely that they would become enemies.

But Ruan Yan didn’t care about this at all and went straight into the staffroom.

Chu Nan returned to the classroom and searched several rounds around the school for Ran Yan without a result.

His worry made him irritable and he took out his phone from his pocket to call her.

No one replied.

Whilst he was searching for Ran Yan, Ruan Yan had already returned home. Sitting straight on the sofa, his hand was being clutched by the Russian-blue cat who was risking its life to have him plait its hair.

Ruan Yan used his other phone to answer the phone, changing to a delicate, milky voice, “Hello, Chu Nan? What’s up?”

“Yan Yan, where did you go?” Chu Nan released a breath once the phone was picked up.

“I… I’m at home.” Ruan Yan’s voice contained a slight trace of guilt, but Chu Nan was too worried about his safety to notice.

“Going home so early?” Chu Nan’s heart jumped wildly, and he could only be relieved once he heard Ruan Yan’s voice.

“En, I’m busy catching up on maths homework.” The cat finally managed to coil around Ruan Yan, and he resignedly patted its neck.

“You’re doing it alone?” Chu Nan ridiculed him, “Did Teacher Zhang trouble you when he called you to the staffroom?”

“I… I can definitely do it.” Ruan Yan’s voice turned smaller and smaller, “He didn’t trouble me and only wanted me to do more questions. I’m hanging up, Chu Nan.” On one hand, Ruan Yan’s face was cold as the cat wrapped around him, on the other, he spoke in a spoilt voice.

Chu Nan was slightly unhappy, “Why are you hanging up so quickly today? I looked for you all day, Yan Yan.”

“People (7) are going to go do their test ma~ Chu Nan, me-me-da (8). I’ll see you tomorrow, mua~” Ruan Yan’s face was cold, but his voice was full of enthusiasm.

He was going to provoke Chu Nan tomorrow, so he’d better give Chu Nan some sweetness to make up for it.

Chu Nan: …

He swallowed, his whole body beginning to burn. Suppressing his voice, he said, “Good.”

Ruan Yan: …As expected, only me-me-da would make Chu Nan hang up the phone.

He put the cat back and answered the test paper almost without thinking.

Using Ran Yan’s handwriting, he finished writing all of the correct answers.

Immediately afterwards, he took out his other phone for when he was disguising as Ruan Yan and sent a text message, “The maths questions are very easy. You have a lot of talent. As long as you work hard, you’ll definitely be successful for the university examination. From Ruan Yan.”

Translators Notes

(1) Yeah, it’s a face slap. She feels as if she’s lost face because what Ruan Yan said contradicts her actions

(2) The exact wording here is 地中海, which literally translated to Mediterranean Sea. However, I searched it up and apparently it’s usually used to describe hair, thus baldie it is, haha…

(3) Reference to QQ. On QQ, the profile picture is usually a penguin.

(4) Yue Gui (月桂) the literal translation is bay laurel according to the internet… It’s a type of leaf… I’m not too sure if there’s symbolism or if it’s representative of anything here

(5) He means don’t make him make a move now, but haha… Let’s make it sound ambiguous

(6) Refers to his sexuality – he’s straight… But it just sounds weird when you translate it, heh…

(7) Sometimes, people like referring to themselves in third person in order to act cute (人家)

(8) I think this did appear in the text previously, but I skimmed through and couldn’t find it. Since I’m not exactly sure of whether it did actually appear or not, I’ll explain it again: it stands for kissing
